How can I get Libre office Free? Reaally Free!
« on: December 02, 2013, 04:59:22 PM »
Libre office has been around awhile. It is much like Open Office.

Here is the problem. Free is not really free. You get Yahoo toolbar and bunch of other stuff your don't want. It used to be free free. I want free free.
Is there some place they put the really free package?

All you have to do is pay attention when installing and opt out of the yahoo toolbar...

Surely downloading from the official source and opting out of the toolbars is much safer than downloading goodness-knows-what from some unofficial torrent.

A torrent which downloads the same installer file one downloads through HTTP, which contains the toolbars.

Yes, That is how I found a torrent thing. So I installed a torrent package I trust and did the torrent and got a clean copy of the LibreOffice Installer.

It was hard to find a decent download link. I tried several, they would either fail or push stuff I did not ask for. Yes, the pushed stuff with no opt-out options. Including one that started a registry scan, so it naiad, I had to stop it with brute force. This was on a recent install o0f XP.
Here is the official site.
http://www.libreoffice.org/‎
But may get this:

Page Not Found
Sorry, the page you tried to visit was not found.
The message is s from their server.

Below is a recent review of this popular office software.

Anyway, I finally got it. It must be good stuff because so many are trying to hitch non ride on it.

So you weren't using the official site after all.

http://www.libreoffice.org/ works fine. The page not found seems to be because that URL has some escaped ASCII-art characters.
You can download it either directly from their server or use the Torrent. Both are the same. I imagine you were downloading from a non-official source previously.

For someone who knows better you took a bad route to a DLoad that probably will cause way more issues than if you had simply followed my advice above...
I give up.

Patio, In really did try. I was not able to do a direct download from the official site. We are a family that basically trust other people. It is increasingly hard to adapt to the growing hostility we find in areas that we used to trust. One example, as you now, is the CNET download site.
Yesterday my wife  got a strange call from somebody that claimed to be part of the credit card department of out bank. He wanted our checking account routing number  to pay down our credit card.
Unrelated? Isolated?  No, they are ball a bunch of crooks.

Really, organizations like the Libre Office people are doing a lot to promote advancement of technology. Sad to say that so many want to use their reputation to defraud the unsuspecting.

Please don't give up on n me and fools like me. I am learning.

Another example.  Softronic claims to have the download, but the don't. Or maybe they do. Google list sSoftronic about three times. So you have to sort them out and find if any are real.

I don't believe that is true.

Again, if you get a clean copy of Libre Office, it is worth it.
Don't give up!

What about using a portable release of it. I haven't tried the LibreOffice Portable yet, but with other open source and free apps and software out there, avoiding an installer can avoid bundleware and toolbars etc from being installed or asked to install.

I am still using Open Office 3.3, which is out of date, but it does what I need and I dont need any additional newer features or support for newer file types etc.

Half the size and it is portable. I will give it a try on my laptop.
