    Slow Start Up
    « on: July 06, 2013, 02:48:45 PM »
Besides taking a long time to start up anything on my computer the only other problem is getting on to the internet which also takes a very long time. My cable co. claims to supply an upstream of 15Mbps. Once I am logged in things go fast. I am using XP and firefox. I have defraged my hard drive and registry, performed a disk clean up, disk wipe and registry cleaner. In the system config. utility box I have disabled all. ( only 3 were checked as start up items).
I have installed A AVG tune up program and in the AVG start up manager it lists 210 start up entries in registry run, registry shell handler, registry shell extensions and registry internet. it would take forever to research every entry to see which I did not use or need. What would happen if I deleted all items listed and ran my O. S. CD thru the computer to recapture the essential programs?
    Can you help.   Thanks

    1) Registry cleaners CAUSE problems, they do not cure them.

    2) DO NOT USE MSCONFIG to make permanent changes to startup items - it is a diagnostic utility.

    3) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

    4) How long does it take to boot to safe mode?

    5) Depending on the answers above, we can try a selective startup with msconfig. First, RE-ENABLE everything you've unchecked. Then do the following:

Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.

After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.

Thanks for getting back to me Allan.
Nothing seems to be new since the slow down.  I have run scans for virus and malware with clean results. It takes about 45 seconds to boot up in safe mode. I have been running in selective startup all along. I have tried your recommendation on starting up the three items independently.  Did not seem to make any difference.
I downloaded Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel but I'm not sure how it works. When I bring up the box with 7 tabs, Startup (user), Startup (common) etc. the boxes are empty.

And how long does it take to boot to normal mode?

It takes 90 seconds from the time I push the on button and get my desk top icons.
Then it takes an other 90 seconds before I can click on an icon.
Sometimes the above may take a little longer.
It can take as long as three minutes to get on to my e-mail page.  However this only started since the cable co. changed to their new and improved e-mail program. This is an issue I will take up with the cable company.

Can't help with the email, but I can tell you that a three minute boot time isn't terrible. I have several systems that take longer and I assure you there is nothing wrong with any of them other than the fact it takes a while for them to boot.  I'm guessing there's nothing wrong with your system either.

If you feel a need to see all startup processes or processes that are running, you can download and run Process Explorer (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx). But if it were me, I just wouldn't worry about it.

OK I will have to learn to live with it. However my computer has been considerably faster at some time in the past.
Getting back to part of my original question.  Do you know what would happen if I deleted the 210 startup programs listed in AVG's start Up Manager and then downloaded my original operating system (XP) CD to get back the essentials?

Is the system working okay? If so, leave it alone.

Deleting registry keys and entries is not a suggested method used here to speed up a PC...

            StartupLite

Download StartupLite by MalwareBytes to your Desktop.
Doubleclick StartupLite.exe to launch the program.
Ensure the Disable box is checked.
            Click Continue.
A pop up message will tell you the unecessary startup items in your list have been disabled and ask you to restart your computer.
            Re-start your computer.
