    Strange dialogue-boxes in Word 2007
    « on: May 15, 2014, 11:34:36 AM »
    Hello

I am getting a series of strange MS Word 2007 dialogue boxes that pop-up (please see attached screenshots), beginning with 'Word cannot open the existing file', then 'Saving auto recovery, then 'Word cannot save....' , then 'Word cannot Save As...', then a final box that tells me that 'Changes have been made that affect the global template, Normal dotm. Do you want to save those changes' (I always say 'no'.

I have had these before, and so uninstalled then reinstalled Word, but the problem has not gone away.

What is causing these dialogue boxes, please?

They occur when I try to upload a Word document - any Word document - to a Web site.

    Thanks.

Apparently, you been making changes to Normal.dotm.   Please tell the whole story about that.

      Hello soybean

      Thanks for your reply.

I was not aware that I had made changes to it - there's no reason for me to do so. Maybe I have clicked 'Yes' instead of 'No' at some point, but it would not have been intentional.

How would I rectify this problem?

      Thanks

I had a user once who got hit with a macro virus that messed with the normal.* files. Here is more info.... btw, do you have an up to date antivirus and have you had any infections prior to this happening?

Cause 3: Word is infected with a macro virus
This problem may occur if your computer is infected with a virus that changes the global template (Normal.dot or Normal.dotm). To help avoid virus infection, keep your antivirus software and your virus definitions updated with the latest versions. Ask your antivirus software vendor for the latest information.

If it is determined that you have this infection, a moderator may redirect this to the Virus / Malware forum. Unfortunately I haven't gotten certified yet to assist with virus's here yet. Attempted to get certified through one of the available sites bleeping computer and was told I'd have to wait for the next offering, but haven't heard anything since  :(

        Hello DaveLembke

Thanks for getting back to me.

I have Malwarebytes, MS Security Essentials, and Superantispyware. Occasionally, I also run TFC.exe and Spybot. MS Security Essentials is running in the background all the time, and once or twice a week I run the others. I haven't got Norton or McAfee (or want them!).

None of these applications have picked up anything other than malware.

It may be, however, that a virus in the past has changed the default template normal.dotm because this has been going on for months.

The link you kindly posted refers to the type of problems I am experiencing every time I open and close Word, but that is not the case with me. It happens only when I upload a file. For example, a Web site asks me to upload a Word document. I click on 'Browse', navigate to my file(s), select one and that's when I get the first dialogue-box popping up, followed by the other boxes whose screenshots I attached.

It only occurs when uploading files.

        Thanks again.
