Best programs to unzip files.
« on: May 06, 2014, 02:19:16 PM »
I did use some of these, but don't remember what options they have.  :)
Which of these programs should I use. Are they all the same?

7-Zip.
PeaZip.
IZArc.
WinZip.

Which have command options that let me do a whole cirectory of Zio files.
Whaich have command option to rename the output file.

Thanks

I went from years of Pkunzip (DOS to Windows 98 SE ), to Winzip ( 98SE to Vista ) and then moved on to 7-zip when a friend suggested it with Windows 7. I was probably one of the few people who actually paid for a license of Winzip back in the day when so many were using an extended use trial of it.

Both Winzip and 7-zip support directory/folder compression with all contents contained in it. Both also give options for output path of the decompressed files/folders although I rarely used that as for I usually just decompressed the contents to the same location of which the .zip file was located.

I prefer 7-zip because its FREE and works well. I haven't found any problems with it yet. Its able to open files zipped under other zip utilities etc.

In the early days of DOS I used the ARC compression utility, then along came PKARC with better performance and better compression.  ARC then sued PKARC for name infringement so PKARC became PKZIP (PK = Phil Katz, the dev) and the .zip extension was used instead of the .arc extension.  Not long after, ARC withered and died.

I used PKZIP for quite a few years but then migrated to Winzip and now use 7-zip.  I believe 7-zip will do all that you need and, as pointed out by DaveLembke, it's FREE.

I've used 7-zip for as long as I can remember, never had a problem with it.  It's lightweight, free and does everything I've asked of it.

I've used 7-zip for a while now and have had absolutely no problems. I can't tell you much about the other programs, but 7-zip has served me well so far.
