.lnk computer issue need help with step 1 ccleaner
    « on: June 19, 2014, 09:24:18 PM »
Before getting to the actual issue I need help with Step 1: House Cleaning. After I download CCleaner Slim I have the option to open but then it doesn't open. I think this is part to do with not being able to open anything. Help please  ???

Maybe I am speaking out of turn, but are you sure you really need that program?
Do you think something is wrong with your computer? If so, exactly what?

Some users are very happy with  CCleaner Slim. But others say it is  of little value. IMHO you should use it only if there is a strong reason to o believe it will help.

    ... Just saying.

I was following the Malware Removal Steps

( The steps will produce three logs which are requested to be added in your post. ) I'm really not sure what it is I have or how to proceed.  I first noticed my issue when my shortcuts had their names with .lnk at the end and they didn't display their icon (except for pdf and word files).  I tried going to the open with... but then noticed they all changed.

Hello and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

      1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
      2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
      3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
      4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
      5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
      6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
      7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.

Hi Dave, thanks so much, I appreciate your help.  The problem I am having is trying to open anything I download as well.  The icon on adwcleaner is that of a red speaker and not llike the one shown on the website.  Most of the icons on my downloads folder are like that or just blank white page icons. What do you recommend?

Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.
        Save Rkill to your desktop.

There are 3 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

Vista and Win7 users need to right click Rkill and choose Run as Administrator

You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

        Rkill.exe
        Rkill.com
        Rkill.scr

Once you've gotten one of them to run then try to immediately run the following.

        Now download and Run exeHelper.

Please download exeHelper from Raktor to your desktop.
        • Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix. A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed. A log file named log.txt will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com Attach the log.txt file to your next message.

Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

I tried downloading all three versions of Rkill, the .exe file shows the red speaker icon and won't do anything when I click open. The other two show as blank pages and when I try to open them a "Windows can't open this file:" pop up appears. My options for this are 1. Use the Web service to find the correct program which takes me to a windows file association page 2. Select a program from a list of installed programs.  Also, when I download it doesn't give me the option of where to save it to ( I just move them from downloads) or to run as administrator.   :||x

This is the instruction for Windows 7 but should be the same on Windows 8
To Run the SFC /SCANNOW Command in Windows 7
          1. Open an elevated command prompt.

          2. To Scan and Repair System Files
NOTE: Scans the integrity of all protected system files and repairs the system files if needed.
          A) In the elevated command prompt, type sfc /scannow and press Enter. (see screenshot below)
NOTE: This may take some time to finish.

          B) Go to step 4.

          3. To Only Verify if the System Files are Corrupted
NOTE: Scans and only verifies the integrity of all proteced system files only.
          A) In the elevated command prompt, type sfc /verifyonly and press Enter.

          4. When the scan is complete, hopefully you will see all is ok like the screenshot below.
NOTE: If not, then you can attempt to run a System Restore using a restore point dated before the bad file occured to fix it. You may need to repeat doing a System Restore until you find a older restore point that may work.

          5. When done, close the elevated command prompt.
          **********************************************
Please boot in Safe Mode with Networking. Download, install and run MBAM. If it runs, try it in Normal mode.

Thanks for the help, quick question though: what do I do if I don't have the option to run as administrator? the other options don't work either.
