Error 1606: Help!
« on: October 23, 2005, 02:26:04 PM »
Hi, I am having real trouble with installing software i download off the internet. It mainly seems to occur with larger companies' software which try to put their program commands into the startup folder. At the start of installation, it begins preparing windows installer and stops, displaying the error message:

"Error 1606. Could not access network location %USERPROFILE%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\."

This then forces me to end the installation. I have followed this on many forum threads on various websites and the problem seems to be originating from the registry folder:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\

Any help would be much appreciated, i can give additional info if needed

OK, the usual questions....

Adware/Spyware/virus scanners up to date and being used?

What operating system?

What browser are you using?

Computer make/model, as well as RAM amount, etc.

What happened before all of thisstarted?

Have you ever had a virus or trojan on this machine?

More info will help get the right answer.

Hi

In reply to your questions:

I have got all the normal spyware programs. Ad aware, spybot etc.

Windows Xp sp1

Internet Explorer

Hp Pavilion t450.uk 2.8Ghz Pentium 4 processor 512mb RAM

i have no real idea as to what i could have possibly done to cause this as i never tamper with the registry, apart from running registry mechanic checks.

Never had a major virus as my hard drive was wiped a month ago.

It is not a windows error but an Install Shield error. Enter error 1606 into google. You will likely have to edit the registry.

    Windows Xp sp1...

    Suggestion:

Use Windows update to download and install Service Pack 2, because many bugs (yours might be one) were fixed with that SP.

    Best regards,

    Hey guys,
I have looked on google and gone onto the install shield website but my registry seems ok  :-/ Tried to install a game today and got the same message so it is still a problem. Im going to look into sp2 but there seems to be a compatability issue with my computer (hp) as i have downloaded sp2 twice and both times i have had to start the computer up in safe mode and use system restore.
Will post back any further developments...
