Google will replace Gmail
« on: November 07, 2014, 07:27:57 PM »
This story is over a week old. It is being repeated  by credible sources. One recent is Tech Republic with this report:
Quote
... About a week ago, I was finally invited into the fold of that mysterious world of Inbox. Like so many others, I had to find out what Google had up their sleeve. Could they improve the already outstanding Gmail app and web interface -- and just what is the reasoning behind the change?
After using Inbox for about a week, I already can see the light. Inbox is not just a worthy contender for Gmail, but a perfect evolution of the interface and system used by millions of people. ...

Whatever they replace it with I hope it's better than gmail.  I have never liked gmail, had an account since it first became available but hardly ever used it.  Have never understood what others like about it.  Same with Chrome.

Just to clarify, Google is NOT replacing Gmail as an email service, this announcement is about Google replacing the Gmail App on Android and iOS with a new app called "Inbox" - The Gmail email service is unaffected.

I've not yet tried the app but it does look very interesting, I'll certainly give it a go.

Geek should read more carefully before posting nonsense...

Geek should read more carefully before posting nonsense...
I am just reporting what has already been said by others.
It was not me that said:
-the automobile would replace the horse
- the internet will replace the book
- computers will replace teachers.

And i never stated any of those things at all...
However you should read more carefully because in this case you are wrong...

Both the premise and the Topic title are wrong....

I have requested an Inbox invite; I'll report back if and when I get one.

According to my search findings, gmail has 100s of millions of users.  So, will Google do something to anger 100s of millions of users?  I think not.  ::)

If he had read the article he would have realised it's simply a new tweak for the Android OS....
Not a wholesale change to GMail as his alarmist Topic title would lead one to believe...

...a wholesale change to GMail
Is exactly what it is. Google wants the current gmail to virtually die.
And I am  neither making this up or wrongly-reading.
Others are saying "Google wants to kill Gmnail."
One of many:

It seems like everybody hates Facebook's algorithmic filters, so naturally Twitter seems about to impose similar functionality on your Twitter feed. And Google, which has already imposed its search-centric view of the world on Gmail, may be headed in the same direction, according to Computerworld's Mike Elgan, who argues that Google's ultimate goal is to kill Gmail. And the reason why Google wants to kill Gmail, he says, is the same reason for those algorithmic filter-based changes in Facebook and Twitter: mediation.
You see, Mike Elgan, is quoted above.   It is not my idea,  it is his.

Writers say a lot of things. Often their primary goal is not to dispense accurate information, but rather information that seems accurate enough to get people to read it.

Well, I have had an Inbox invite, and do you know what? There are 2 versions, one for Android and one for iOS! It's just a phone app! What was all the fuss about?

Got my invite as well.  As Salmon Trout pointed out there are 2 apps, 1 each for iOS and Android.  However, there is also an app for the Chrome Browser so technically there's 3 apps.

Anyway, it wants to "bundle" or group different emails which I don't really care about.  I'll use it a it to see if it grows on me.

Gmail is better then hotmail and yahoo mail. I have had many problems with both, but not one yet with gmail. Good thing, its just the app name their changing, I would hate to have to change all account emails associated with my gmail.

    Gmail? Inbox? Inbox by Gmail?
Whatever you call it, many say they like it better. Some hate it.
    Update:
Now it comes from Microsoft. What?
The best Gmail app for the iPhone is now made by Microsoft
    Quote
Gmail is the world's most popular email service, and the iPhone, as if this week didn't make it abundantly clear, is the world's most popular smartphone. The two have been around for years and years, however the experience of using them together has never been particularly good. *censored*, let's be honest, if you're relying on Google's own email apps on the iPhone, your experience is doubleplusungood. But there are plenty of alternatives in Apple's App Store, and it just so happens that the best among them now bears the name of Microsoft Outlook.
So the new Gmail is now Outlook?  ???

Gmail is an email service. You can access it using a web browser, or via a phone app, or using an email client like Outlook or Thunderbird or even good old Eudora as well as many others.
