With the computer unplugged, remove and reseat the RAM modules. What happened prior to this?

Barry,

There are a lot of possible causes for this.

With the limited info you gave, I would suspect hardware problems.

Check to make sure all hardware and connectors are in place and seated properly, especially the memory stick(s).  Reseat them to be sure.

As always, unplug the PC before you stick your hands in the box.  Follow electrical and ESD safety precautions.

If this doesn't help, check out the Dell Optiplex Forum:  http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums?category.id=optiplex
There are a number of topics that relate to your problem.

The User Manual and Service Guide for this unit is here:  http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/opgx110/

Good Luck!

checked and reseated memory sticks and retried. still the same.
have noticed on switch on no hard drive lights or sound.
on turn on-:
memory address line failure
decreasing available memory
f1 to continue (then it tells you to reboot)
f2 to set up

if f2 selected notice on boot sequence diskette drive only seen (with tick next to it) no other drive shown

installed system memory 131 mb sdram

any other ideas. not really a computer buff

Regards Barry

One of your RAM modules has unfortunately bitten the big one...try one at a time to determine which one is wonked and replace it.
Don't continue to run with a bad stick in there as you risk data loss.
Visit Crucial's site which will tell you exactly which RAM that machine will run on
You don't have to buy it from them but the info is good to know.

So you have two 128 meg and one 256 meg modules? Try testing each of them individually in the machine looking at the F2 screen, as well as testing with MemTest (free at www.memtest86.com).
