moved HHD to new computer cant get audio
    « on: November 06, 2005, 03:01:03 PM »
I am a complete newbie at this but attempted to move my hard drive from my non functioning HP Pavillion to my husbands computer which is a VPremier.  He has no backup CDs and this is why he has not been able to use his.  The transfer was successful but the sound card and audio is a mess.  I have gone through a troubleshooting section I found online and nadda.  I can't figure out a darn thing.  I am using his speakers and did not transfer anything from my computer except the hard drive.

Do I need to install my sound card from my old computer and if so where is it lol? I am getting an error code (28) which means the audio device is installed but missing the software and drivers.  I cannot find the drivers online for this sound card and it has some odd name like unimodem half duplex wave device.  Obviously I do not know what I am doing.

Could someone please walk me through this and how do I make this darn computer accept my HP restore cds or is that even possible?

Thank you so much, Dove :-[

    Well, I'll give you an A for effort!  :o :o :o :o :o

This usually doesn't work as well as you have described, but nonetheless let's move on. The unimodem device is probably voice/fax modem that was in his machine. If there is a modem there, you will need to get the drivers for it, or anything else hardware based that was not automatically picked up. You can remove the modem and look on it for information, an FCC ID#, etc, or you might get lucky with it and all the other unidentified's by downloading and running Everest Home Edition, free at www. lavalys.com. Once you know what you are looking for we can get the drivers.

He may have a sound card in there but it would probably be listed as a PCI multimedia Device, or something similar.

If you had sound on yours (what model is it?) it would probably be built in to the motherboard, and so, not transferrable.

He may or may not have sound on his. What make and model again?

Are there any other yellow marks in device manager?

    Let us know.

My old computer is a HP Pavillion XG823 his is a VPremier cant find any model number anywhere!  His sound was working fine before I added my hard drive and mine was working fine on my computer before I tore it apart.

You are right it is a fax/modem because in the other areas I pull up info it lists it as a voice modem line #00 and this is listed under audio devices as if that is the only audio device available.  I am afraid to remove the modem because it took me a while working with Charter tech support to get their modem working so I could get online.  I don't know what the program you sent me is suppose to do, I would like to know before I download anything and run around haphazardly deleting things...lol.

PS the sound car is listed just as you said no further info. There is a yellow mark on the unimodem nothing else and it says it's okay but if that is not truly the audio device and I can get online what in the bleep do I do..grrrrr.   I hope I have answered your questions except for the VPremier model number

      Thanks for answering so quickly

Once you get the sound card drivers loaded and the modem drivers you will be OK and that will go away.

The Everest program identifies hardware components inside your computer without even having to open the case! It can be very helpful. No spyware, etc. involve. We recommend it here because it works, and since this is an open forum if someone told you to do something not safe MANY others would chime in with a warning.

I would run it anyway. No risk, and may prevent some surprises later when other things are found. It could also ID that modem!

That sound card - CM187368 - may be better identified as well.

Anything that sounds like sound or modem - Multimedia, PCI devices, and whatever else looks good.

Okay, you have a Lucent LT WinModem, so you will need to get drivers for that.

And you have a SiS audio chip on the motherboard, evidently SiS 7018. So you will need drivers for that.

You can get these at www.driverguide.com

                Login name : drivers
                Password :  all

Then do a search for these for your operating system or PM me with your e-mail and I can send them to you, if you are totally unfamiliar with this.

The end is in sight!  ;D

I have downloaded drivers from here before but am having difficulty finding what you mentioned above.  If you can find them would be fantastic [email protected]

too many listed on SiS 7018
