Help please with mouse related problem
« on: November 11, 2005, 05:11:42 AM »
Hi people, (I hope you can help)  ???

I have been having problems with my pc, in that it would not boot as it failed to recognise the keyboard being present. After taking this to a shop (I am not very hardware-confident), they said that the standard port where the keyboard plugs in is faulty, and sold me a cordless desktop that has a keyboard which connects via usb, and a mouse that connects via the ps/2 port. The good news is that the keyboard now works. The bad news is that the mouse doesn't. The mouse will work when booted in safe mode, but otherwise stalls at the beginning of windows and says that it cannot find a mouse in ps/2 port. I have tried different mice, and a ps/2-to-usb converter (to plug both the keyboard and mouse into usb drives) and this does not work either. If I boot the pc by 'Step-by-step confirmation,' it stalls when it tries to run 'msmouse.vxd' - although it also stalls if I choose not to run this.
I need help, I have spent many hours trying different combinations of keyboards/mice/startup methods with no success. I am currently considering drawing a face on the side of my pc and then punching it.

How many USB ports do you have?

If you have another one, I would go for a USB mouse.

Both my keyboard, and mouse, are connected via USB ports.

Thanks for replying - the problem seems to be (in my uneducated opinion) that windows is looking for the mouse in ps/2 port. I have tried using a converter and plug the mouse into a usb socket - but the same message still appears?

Uninstall the mouse in control panel and reboot with the USB mouse plugged in.

I have tried this, but when windows starts, a message comes up saying that no mouse is detected in the ps/2 mouse port and one should be attached now. It also says that the computer will need to be switched off to attach the mouse.
I can't get past this message  -  I have to reboot and then get stuck in the same place, or go into safe mode and can't do anything.

If both the keyboard and mouse are wireless, you have "connect" through the receiver/transmitter. Press the connect button on the receiver first, then press the connect button on the mouse.
If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything.

The problem is not to do with connecting the mouse or keyboard to the receivers...it is to do with getting windows to recognise that there is a usb mouse present.
Windows starts up and displays the message 'Windows did not detect a mouse in the ps/2 port. Please connect one now - to do so turn off your pc.' As far as I know this cannot be bypassed.
So the 2 options that result from this are:
    1. Boot into safe mode - the mouse doesn't work and I can't add new hardware.
    2. Boot into normal mode and receive the same message as above.

I can't attach a ps/2 mouse because this port does not work.

Going backk to the original post. What if you took the new keyboard/mouse back to the shop with the computer and have them show you how it is done. (If it does work - cool. If it doesn't maybe a refund or some better advice is in order.

You made it sound like this was a recent purchase.

It's also possible that in order for you to run a USB mouse you might have to disable the PS2 port in the BIOS...
How new is this machine ? ?
