    Keep getting BSOD
    « on: July 11, 2015, 01:20:01 PM »
I have no idea what to do.  My computer keeps going to BSOD and restarting.  I tried to search why, but it only stays on for maybe 1 or 2 minutes before it simply goes to the BSOD and restarts again.  I don't even have time to read the screen and see what the error codes are or anything.  I only have my grandsons laptop to do trouble shooting so any thoughts or ideas are appreciated.  I've checked all the connections, appear to be solid and intact, and I don't know what happened prior as I was sleeping and the wife was playing a game (probably on facebook) and all of sudden it went to bsod and keeps doing it.  thanks in advance

    1) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

    2) Download BlueScreenView:
    http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next reply

As far as I am aware nothing new was added, changed, or anything, but then again, I was asleep after work. But I couldn't find anything.  Just for info, the computer hasn't shut down this time but here is the file.

First thing you want to do is check your ram: download memtest (http://memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a dedicated .iso burning utility (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility

Also, you should run a diagnostic on your hd: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure you select the tool which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), to make the CD bootable.
For Toshiba drives, see here: http://sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx?Path=ServicesSupport/FujitsuDrivesUSandCanada/SoftwareUtilities#diagnostic

Just a quick follow up.  I'm still going to do the steps above, assuming i can figure out who makes my hard drive, i've looked but all it says is standard disk (it's a dell xps that i have).  But I shut the system down, and turned it back on later, and it's been running w/o a bsod for about 6  hours now.  So i don't know what the problem was/is, maybe i'll know more after doing the above steps, but thanks again for all the input.

Your HD manufacturer and model should be listed in Device Manager (Control Panel). For a comprehensive list of installed components and software, download, install and run Belarc Advisor

getting ready to work on above tasks.  how do I know which memtest to use, and according to belarc my harddrive is arrayo but I didn't see that listed.  this is so weird, cuz it was working fine the other night and when I first downloaded belarc it went to a blue screen, but today, belarc worked just fine, and this time when I first tried to post this msg it went to blue screen.  oh well, i'll work on the above tasks first.  thanks.

Never heard of arrayo. Look in Device Manager - what does it list as your hd?

Okay. Well you can try the dos version of the WD utility or you can just do the following (which isn't as comprehensive, but it's better than nothing):

Right-click on a command prompt icon and open as administrator. In the command prompt window type: chkdsk /r  (then press ENTER). You'll be told the disk is in use and asked if you want to run checkdisk on the next boot. Say yes, exit the command prompt window, and reboot.

"arrayo" is probably "Array0" which is something of a pseudo-device created when your HDD is on a RAID Array.

From what I can find it seems that Dell XPS systems come preconfigured with two hard disks as part of a BIOS-level RAID Array. This would explain why it would be listed and detected as "array0".

I've tried to find what brand of HDD they use but they don't appear to have it listed anywhere.
I was trying to dereference Null Pointers before it was cool.

well I got a little intimidated by the tacktech thing, I went to a couple of links but it said link wasn't valid/no page and went to a western digital page, so I just did the chkdsk /r thing.  Let me know if there is anything else I need to look at or do.  I've had one bsod today that I've been told about/made aware of.

How long did you let it run? It needs to make several passes - you can even let it run overnight.

Please look in Device Manager. Are there any yellow or red symbols?

Depending on the results of a longer ram test, one other thing you can try is a clean boot / selective startup. It's a lengthy process but will help determine whether or not your issue is being caused by a process loading at boot as opposed to a hardware error. To run a selective startup, follow the procedure outlined below:

Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.

After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a dedicated app such as Autoruns (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.

okay i let the memtest run for just over 7 hours,  4 passes and no errors.  the only thing I see yellow in device manager is something called teredo tunneling pseudo interface which of course I have no idea what that is.  have to go to work, so I can't look at the config file tonight.

One other thing you should do is rule out malware as a possible contributing factor. If you haven't already done so, please run a full scan with your installed anti virus app. Also please run a full scan with MalwareBytes. I'm not suggesting the problem IS malware, but one way or the other I'd like to make sure.

teredo isn't the problem. Let's try the selective startup please. Also, do you have an anti virus app installed? If so, please run a full scan in safe mode.

I do have mcafee, but when I tried to scan in safe mode it just sat there, didn't do anything.  ill work on the selective start up, if it will stay on long enough, or can I/should I do that in safe mode as well?

ok im working on the selective startup, when I went to msconfig, selective start up, itwould only let me uncheck two boxes, it wouldn't let meuncked the bottom one original boot configuration (something like that), when I clicked apply it rechecked the topbox.  am I doing this right?

That's fine. Just uncheck the two boxes. And when you have a chance you can run an online scan using ESET (from Safe Mode with networking enabled): http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/

okay, right now in its present state I don't think its connecting to the internet, but ill try the eset anyways.  in the earlier post it said to add things back one or two at a time, exactly how?  do I go the tab and then check one or two boxes and restart to see what happens?  right now it hasn't bsod like it had been.

Yes, recheck one or two startup items and reboot. Continue the process until the system blue screens again.

sorry to be such a bother, I'm going through services and selecting one or two at a time, hit apply, restart, wait 5-10 minutes then I goback to msnconfig, check a couple more and repeat.  I assume that's what I am supposed to do.  the ones I check still show stopped, is this normal or am I missing a step?

hello again, still working thru msconfig.  I made it to power and got a bsod.  to be sure, I unchecked it and a few more before it, went thru the process again, and when I got to power, it eventually went to bsod.  not sure how long before it did, I was out of the room, so I unchecked it, restarted and nothing, so the third time I checked power, restarted, and it has now been about 30 minutes without a bsod.  should I continue through the process and see if something else happens or wait to see if this goes to a bsod?  thanks.

heres another update, it's been 1.5 hours and still no bsod, so either it's not the power, I'm imagining things, or I missed something.  should I mybe go back a few settings uncheck and try again to see if I can get a bsod, mybe it was one of the other ones and I just missed it?  I'm pretty sure it was after the power option, but now I wonder if I was mistaken.

well sometime since my last post and this one it went bsod, not sure at what exact time, but I didn't do anything more with msconfig so power was the last thing that I checked.

Okay, the last thing I'd like to try is to boot to safe mode and leave it there for a day or two. If there is no bsod from safe mode it's likely a process starting with Windows. But if there IS a bsod from safe mode it's almost certainly a hardware problem and it could be anything from the power supply to cpu, mobo, or something else.

Really no need to apologize - you're doing fine. In safe mode everything is automatically disabled so it doesn't matter.

Well, that points to a process loading with the OS and that takes us back to the selective startup.

okay, should I start over, or pick up from the power and continue on.  I'm thinking the latter option, but want to be sure

Tell you what, let's do it this way. Download and run Autoruns from Microsoft Technet (https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396). Go to the LOGON tab and uncheck everything. Reboot. Assuming no bsod for a while, start adding items back one or two at a time, rebooting after each change and waiting to see if there is a bsod. This way we can start with the non-service processes. Hopefully it will be one of those. Also, before you disable any processes please do the following:

                                                            Download Process Explorer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
Unzip ProcessExplorer.zip, and double click on procexp.exe to run the program.
Click on View > Select Colunms.
In addition to already pre-selected options, make sure, the Command Line is selected, and press OK.
Go File>Save As, and save the report as Procexp.txt.
Attach the file to your next reply.

                                                                      1) Uninstall all McAfee products (you can use this removal tool if you like: https://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS101331)

                                                                      2) Install any other AV. If you want a free product, the best of breed are Avira, Avast, AVG, MSE. The best paid product (IMO) is Kaspersky (http://usa.kaspersky.com/)

                                                                      3) Using Autoruns, disable all process I've highlighted above

                                                                      4) Reboot and let's see what happens

                                                                      gomer309

It's just that McAfee is truly the worst of the worst and it installs all sorts of extra processes. Pretty much any other AV is better than McAfee. As for Autoruns, you can disable everything from the EVERYTHING tab - just uncheck the items.

After uninstalling McAfee, please look in Programs and Features to make sure all McAfee products have been removed.

                                                                          http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html

in the lower right hand side where the clock is and a window with some icons is a speaker with an x on it which says audio service isn't running.  no sound, I tried to watch a video and nothing.  device manager only has a yellow flag on that teredo thing.  I went to the control panel and clicked on sound and it says no audio devices installed.  the other thing I mentioned before is when the computer sits idle for too long I can't simply wake it up by tapping the space bar.  it's fine if I catch it within like 5-15 minues I can tap and it'll come back but it seems if it's longer than that I have to shut it all down.
