    DGS-1224t 24 port switch lag
    « on: November 30, 2015, 11:20:50 PM »
Title is pretty self explanatory, but this is my setup Telstra Cable Modem > Switch via Ethernet > My computer
. the switch also has a dink 345 share ready nas taking 2 Ethernet ports, a DVR box for my cameras, my computer(already mentioned) and a spare (Ethernet from switch to my room currently not getting used).

The problem im having is for a LAN network it gets very high ping

Pinging 192.168.0.101 with 32 bytes of data:
    Reply from 192.168.0.101: bytes=32 time=503ms TTL=255
    Reply from 192.168.0.101: bytes=32 time=23ms TTL=255
    Reply from 192.168.0.101: bytes=32 time=508ms TTL=255
    Reply from 192.168.0.101: bytes=32 time=22ms TTL=255

where as my modem (connected to the switch same as the computer im using) gets perect ping

Pinging 192.168.0.1 with 32 bytes of data:
    Reply from 192.168.0.1: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=64
    Reply from 192.168.0.1: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=64
    Reply from 192.168.0.1: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=64
    Reply from 192.168.0.1: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=64

    Ping statistics for 192.168.0.1:
        Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
        Minimum = 1ms, Maximum = 1ms, Average = 1ms

I'm not flash with networking so i ask kindly to dumb it down just a tad for me, im not sure what could be causing this if its a setting on my computer or the modem or switch or bad hardware, i would really appreciate someones help

also on a side note i started looking into this due to high ping in gaming, but my internet still maxes out on speedtest.net to 110Mb/s down and about 2 up with 8 ms of ping

    Your internet is doing OK.
    So the real issue is:

So, who is on 192.168.0.101 anyway? And why should it matter?

thank you for your reply is is really appriciated

My internet speed are good, but they tend to go down and a second or so and come back up, also im getting the same ping as a friend i play online games in and he is on adsl 2 the a less then average connection.

192.168.0.101 is the ip for the switch im not sure is i have set it up right or not

How many people share your connection?
Why do you need a 24 port switch?
Is the switch in the network tree?
For best performance you would use only the modem and your computer. Any other device on the local network has the potential of causing lag in the network if it is not working right.
The ping results would suggest that the switch is not running at full speed.

What sort of latency do you get when pinging another device connected to the switch instead of the switch itself.  The CPUs in switches are very basic so it could just be that the switch itself is slow to respond to pings but the rest of the devices on the network are fine.  If you are getting 8ms ping to the 192.168.0.1 when connected through the switch then the switch is working fine.

thanks for your reply, im getting <1ms ping to my modem which is connected to the switch so i have a feeling your right.(my thinking was i dont know much about networking so it has to be some setting iv done wrong haha)
So would a switch like this with a decent lag to ping affect my ping in online gaming?

No, if the latency to your modem is fine (as it is), the switch is not slowing down the connection from your PC to the internet to any noticeable level.

Just took a look at my network which has a pretty decent switch (HP Procurve 1800-24g) - Pinging the switch from my router gets around 6ms latency, pinging my home server from the router (which is connected via the switch) gets <0.2ms latency.  The difference isn't as drastic as yours but it does still show that the switch responds to pings much slower than a full blown machine on the same network.

To try to explain this better - When you ping your "switch" you are actually pinging a separate management device inside the switch, this can be thought of as another computer connected to the switch, just that it's internal.  The chips inside the switch that actually provide the network switching don't themselves have an IP address.  Even if the switch's management device is slow to respond to pings, this doesn't reflect on the speed at which the switch can route packets - You can have a regular PC that is really slow to respond to pings connected to the switch but this doesn't mean that all traffic routed through the switch is also slowed down.

thanks for clarifying i might replace my coax into the house in this case if the switch is ok :)
