I need a fast, dependable browser. One that's immune to hijackers and viruses and maybe doesn't use the Adobe Shockwave player. Can anyone make a suggestion?

Use Knoppix Live DVD Distro... every time you reboot your computer its booted clean. Its a Read-Only OS so even if there was malware for Linux its gone on reboot.

For a system that uses a Writable OS ( a non-live OS )  there is no immunity because its vulnerable to writing of bad data to the media!

Web browser you mean?  Stick with the well known and supported ones - Google Chrome, Chromium, Firefox, IE.etc.  They are as pretty much as secure as a browser can be and will get security patches the fastest.  Almost all of the security with a browser is down to the user not visiting dodgy websites.

That's your opinion; it cannot be taken as a statement of fact.   I find Chrome to consume more CPU resources than Firefox when I have many tabs open in the browser.

While it is an opinion, for all of my experiences, chrome does take the most resources when it runs. However, it does this to try to get you the fastest browsing experience. On my PC Firefox is very light and fast to open but my browsing changes with my CPU usage. With chrome it hogs up much more CPU space but my browsing speed is always very fast. (Just a personal experience)
