i ran test disk quick test it found only dell utilities only
    did not complete deeper scan.
i used wondershare live boot cd
    fixed mbr, and boot sector
was unable to use any other tools on the cd
    data recovery,etc did not work.
i am trying data recovery with gparted at the moment
and yes computer is so biffed up now,
i want to be able to get my files off harddrive if possible. dump on cds
i really suck at windows computers, i did enjoy the apple/texas instruments days
so i am asking for help.

Sometimes you need to try different distros to find one that matches to hardware.

I have a similar laptop with Core 2 Duo CPU that I had display driver issues with Mint 17.2 and Mint 17.2 is very much like Ubuntu ... I got mine working on Linux Mint 9 LTS . You might be able to get yours to boot off of Linux Mint 9 LTS bootable disk and then gain access to your hard drive to get your data if the hard drive is not ill. Although your data might be all gone now that you tampered with it from looks of it.
