I just downloaded defender ( I think ) ! from Cnet. How do i know if it's been downloaded ? I didn't get a message. There are several other downloads of one kind or another. How do I know if they're free , & do I need them?
    I  have Windows 8 , Lenovo 515

You shouldn't need to download Windows Defender - It is built in to Windows 8.

Any other version than the built-in one is suspicious.
