In Windows 10, you will find a Windows Defender icon in Control Panel. Double click on it. You should see something like this:

If you see mainly green, including "PC status: Protected" and in the Home tab a heading saying "Your PC is being monitored and protected" then it is running as it should. Is this not happening?

In Windows 7, you have Microsoft Security Essentials, which looks exactly the same.

See here to use Defender istead of MSE
