Did you get hit with malware or were you messing around in the registry and broke it?

Easiest fix would be to perform a clean install. In regards to your question the only thing I can share is that generally 0x00000001 means a feature is enabled and 0x0000000 means disabled.  ( 1 )  or ( 0 ) for registry entry based on the value. It appears that everything is enabled. You could be dealing with the cortana program itself corrupted somehow and it wouldnt matter what you did in the registry, if its corrupt its corrupt and easier to start with a clean build after backing up your data to an external drive.

Did you back up the registry before fiddlin around in there ? ?

I use and recommend ERUNT for this.

Windows Search and Cortana are separate features, so those registry settings have no effect whatsoever on Cortana.

It started by suddenly the edge app would open and close as soon as it was started. And the "cortana and search settings" menu vanished from use. Although, it still shows up as im typing it but clicking does nothing. http://imgur.com/a/XnScj

I got edge working, camera, start button... but the search feature is broken. I suppose I will either create a new account and switch over the files or do a clean install.

Thanks for that "ERUNT" can't believe how quick and simple that program is to run.

Its a little more complicated than that, there was a couple problems going on but during them and or in between them I was running my computer with a "Failing" hard drive. I got a new hard drive days/weeks later and attempt to clone the failing drive. It did not work, and apparently reason being --- that drive failed, or was failing, too ! if you could believe that. It took my focus off the problems at hand, when I got my replacement drive after switching out the dud (amazon sent me) I finally did a full clone.

Prior when the last time my computer crashed, I decided im not doing anything more until I first clone it. I cannot find the backup I made and not 100% sure it was done in windows or another 3rd party application. Backing up the registry separately might have been a smart idea..

Reason im associating the win-search with cortana is the event viewer statements that were made. Maybe that might help shedding some light here?

Oh, and the "cortana search and settings" menu is gone. It shows up in the settings search box but clicking it does nothing, nothing opens. Another reason to suspect cortana !

Since the old HDD was failing unfortunately you have cloned any errors it had...i normally don't recommend it but in this case i think a wipe and a clean install is the way to go...

I agree but the poster who helped me through every step and what to buy, how to install, and everything---told me otherwise. I asked if it would and he said no.

Considering his over 10,000 posts and all the advice I got that far, I figured id risk it. Oh well clean install or repair. if and what one i choose, ill chime in here.

            Ahhh  OK.

Startup repair = Registry back to default settings...all files and apps intact.

Clean install =i think you know what that means.
