hard drive problem

Help!
we received a computer from a volunteer.  When we turned the computer on, it boots up as usual but after displaying the xp home edition (upgrade from 98) screen, the computer stops and there is a blank screen with a arrow that won't respond to the mouse.

Someone who tried to fix it said it had the sasser worm - he installed the fix and the result was the above.  The only way you can turn the computer off is to hold the button for a few seconds and then it goes off.

it's an 8000 series HP Pavillion desktop

I tried a disk scan which came up with the one of your disks needs to be checked for consistency - it then scans but there is no indication of any problems

There were no disks/restore cd's included so.....

Any suggestions?

Did you try to boot it in safe mode?  Hit F8 right as the BIOS exits and it starts to boot windows.
