Keyboard keys
« on: December 30, 2005, 03:14:15 PM »
I was enjoying a beverage when i spilt the fizzy juice all over the keyboard.

Yes before any one comments i am a idiot.

Anyway.....

The Backspace key and the Big Shift key have become very stuck. Well they move but its slowly.

i was wondering since juice went in there and it didn't short out, (i dont know how they work) would it be safe to wash the sticky dried juice out with water?

thanks

It's bad netiquette to call someone an idiot.
    (Unless you put a couple of  :D :D after it  ;) )
Mate, Ive heard of people putting keyboards under the shower to clean them out.  :o
I'd hold it upside down & squirt it with one of those spray bottles filled with clean water then dry it out with a cool hair dryer while it's still upside down.

R0SS..... I would be inclined to open up the keyboard , and wipe it down inside using rubbing alcohol and those cotton swabs on the sticks .........I would repeat this until the sticky keys operate freely ....then let sit for several days and reassemble .

      Cheers

From my experience with alcohol and keyboards i have never saved one yet. I have tried the hairdryer only to find that after a few days the keyboard decides to not to work again. I have lost 3 keyboards due to Beer.

If you haven't already taken your keyboard apart, don't. Most well built keyboards have a
membrane that covers the switches under the keys (cheapies might not). Fill a spray bottle
with alchohol and with the keyboard upside down, spay the sticky keys generously
with alchohol. Then use the cool hairdryer to dry it out. (Shake the keyboard
gently to remove any alchohol that might be inside the keycaps.) The keycaps might
also be removable. If they are, that is the best alternative.

          Ok.

          Thanks for all the advise,

With the Backspace, I just tapped the *censored* out of it and its no longer sticky lol

that could be a short term fix till i get round to cleaning it all out tomorrow.

The upside-down-alcohol-spray bottle technique is a good one.  I'll just add that denatured (good-natured) alcohol is better than the normally available isopropol (rubbing)alcohol for this.  Denatured alcohol leaves less of a residue when dried, and in a pinch makes a fairly good martini (too strong though).

Disassembling-your-keyboard technique will allow you to better clean the membrane and any other component you might miss.  You will be amazed at the number of screws it takes to hold 2 pieces of plastic together though.  I always have a few left over when I finish.
