No Sound After System Restore
« on: January 03, 2006, 08:08:23 PM »
After using a system restore cd due to a complication with passwords, sound was not available from the speakers (or anyother audio output device). I believe this is similar to what another problem I just recently read states. All connections are correct, speakers are not "mute" and my computer is saying that all sound components are installed. When I try to play an audio file with Windows Media Player it skips it and says to try sound troubleshooter. As we all know, that never works.

Windows XP Media Center Edition (I believe its 2004),

Try removing the sound drivers from the device manager and restart the computer.

You're gonna have to me more specific than that, although I know it really can't.

    Start>Settings>Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device manager>Expand the Sound thingie
and remove all the sound drivers.
Re-boot & let Windows re-detect & install the drivers again.
You can then update to the latest drivers from the manufacturer's website.

Update drivers? I don't even know who the manufacturers are! Would that by any chance be Microsoft?

Have you removed the drivers, re-booted and allowed windows to detect & install the drivers yet?

In addition to the above, if you are still having trouble with your audio, make sure your Windows Audio Services are turned on (Win XP).

Right click on My Computerand select Manage. From the computer management window, expand Services and Applications then click Services to open up the window listing all available services. The ones labeled 'started' are currently running, and the startup type 'automatic' denotes a service which is started by windows each time the operating system loads.

Find Windows Audio.  Make sure it is marked automatic and started.  If not, right click on the highlighted service and turn it on.

The page is in German, but choose any of the three links. And save this file, it will not be online forever.

Well aren't I lucky I know German, huh? What I'm downloading would help me determine what my sound divice thingy is, won't solve my problem, but would help me get to the solution, right?

Yes, you must know the device before you can install the proper driver for the device so it will work correctly.

It's easy enought to download the full version from Everest, it just runs out after a couple of weeks but it's fine for what you want.

Is it any wonder after six days to find out something that should take six minutes :-?
