Images and video

On web pages and e-mail I get blank spaces where an image or video should be.  Only a square in the top left of the blank space that has a sqare, triangle and circle in it.  Tried a few things but nothing works.

What did you try? Are you on dialup with "acceleration"? Did it used to work? What has happened since then?

Thanks for responding.  I am on broadband 1 meg with tiscali.  The laptop is a toshiba withy intel celeron processor.  I have tried a few suggestions from tiscali, changing the permissions in internet explorer and deleting cookies and temp. files.  However, I really haven't a clue what I'm doing and I was hoping that someone out there had a really simple answer.  I Have Win Anti-Virus and I had Win File Fix.  The problem seemed to be when I deleted that program  because I was sick of their pop-ups.  Any assistance for this thickie gratefully received.
