Can't get pass the password screen
« on: December 26, 2005, 05:35:39 PM »
I can't get pass the password screen on my laptop with XP.
I enter the correct user name and password and it looks like it is going to let me in... then the screen just comes right back to the logon screen without any error messages.
I click on F8 to go into safe mode and I choose safe mode and still brings me right to the regular logon scrren.
I don't think it's password related because if I purposely enter a wrong password, it tells me that it's wrong.
Any help would be appreciated.

When you try and get into safe mode are you logging in as Administrator or your regular name?

Should be Admin - this is the original unchanged default account.
If that does the same, Last Known Good COnfiguration? Still no joy?....time to reinstall your OS.

I would love to re-install the OS, but my 15-year old niece has a lot of stories she wrote on the laptop (and of course, she did not back it up) she has been writing for almost a year.
Yes, I did try the 'Last Known Good Configuration..."
Laptop is an off brand. Nobilis Built to Order Laptop.
    It's P4, XP home, 512MB.
I asked several of my "techie" friends and no one seems know what is going on...
She uses this laptop solely for her stories. She has never gone online with this laptop, so I don't think it's a virus or anything.

Check to see if the Caps Lock isn't selected.  Sometimes passwords & usernames are case-sensitive.

If you can get into Windows, you could purchase a USB Flash Drive to save the files and then be able to transfer them to another PC or laptop.  That would be the easiest and most convenient way to back up the text files.

    Please read the original problem...
The problem is not password related.
    I cannot get into windows.

The smart thing would be to boot with a Linux Live CD and copy the files o a flash drive, to floppy, or wherever. Linspire is the most Windows like Linux and should do nicely. The 5.0 LiveCD is a free download.

The file is an ISO so you will need to have someone burn it to a CD with Nero, ec. You can't just copy it. Just boo with that CD in the drive and you should be good to go. It's not Windowos, so none of the Windows crappola applies to it.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.   ;)
