Does anyone know of way of running a program such as Excel, Word, etc... in an IE or Firefox browser window, something like Acrobat Reader does for PDF files.

In a word, no. What are you trying to accomplish? I don't see how this would be helpful, even if it were possible.

Not sure exactly what you want to do, but you can publish Word and Excel files to the web.  Take a look in Help (both Word and Excel) and do a search there on publish to web.  Here's a little example of an Excel file I put on the web: http://www.derolph.net/Mom80thCosts.htm
