    PCI slot for my WiFi
    « on: January 27, 2006, 08:25:31 AM »
I have one AGP slot and four PCI. My AGP has the second-biggest board in that box (second only to the motherboard itself). My PCI slots, pre-power-supply-frying, have gon as follows:

    PCI 1: 7.1 sound board
    PCI 2: Linksys wireless interent
    PCI 3: NONE
    PCI 4: NONE

After replacing the motherboard, I couldn't get the WiFi to fit in the PCI 2. This was a headache before, as well. Annoyed, I pluggged it into the third PCI. It fit perfectly. Odd thing is, I can plug other things into PCI 2. It works fine. And it looks the same as PCI's 1, 3, and 4. So what's the magic difference?

Probably the angle you are putting it in. Something weird that is up with the slots, or you can go with my solution, the computer is against you.

As do I, but it seems odd that two perfectly identical slots would accept everything except for the WiFi, which for some reason #2 can't handle. Thing is, this motherboard is brand spankin' new, got it exchanged at Fry's electronics after I blew the other one. So I don't think it's defective...  ::)

Fry's sells SO MUCH refurbed/returned equipment that I would not expect anything to be new there. Sorry, but it may have been returned for that reason.   ;)

Ah, whatever. I have two more PCI slots. Hmm. Makes me wonder if they are reselling the motherboard, identical to this one, that I took back because the darn thing fried. Just a scary thought.

I do hasten to say that I have yet to return a defective product that wasn't defective as a result of poor usage by  me. In other words, the only things I take back there is stuff I screw up. All my computer equipment came from Frys except the hdd and DVD-RW drive. Everything else comes from there, no problems. :D

Yes, sometimes they get returns just because the wrong thing was purchased, butI have not been impressed overall, and like I said, a LOT of the stuff is returned or refurbed, whether it is marked that way or not.

Sorry to bump this thread again, but I found out the problem.

The WiFi is a tight fit on my motherboard, and the offsets under PCI #2 weren't able to push back enough to get that sucker in. OK. Other cards work there because the fit is looser, but I needed the offset that I had at PCI #3. Figures...

So it was a straight out mechanical problem?
Out with the angle grinder & hammer. :D
