    System restore problem
    « on: January 26, 2006, 03:30:59 AM »
    Hello,

    I use Windows ME.
I have a problem with my system restore. It saves the system every time I use my computer, and this cause the system restore to be full and not work properly. How can I say to my computer to save the system only one time a week?

    Thanks,
    Michael.

There should be a setting under the control panel with your system settings, or under my computer. Should be a tab with system settings, then a dialog box for the system, and you should be able to change it there.

I don't know if that exists with Windows ME although it does with Windows XP...

        [edit]Change Restore Point Creation Frequency

        [Start] [Run] [Regedit]
        Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore
Modify/Create the Value Data Type(s) and Value Name(s) as detailed below.
Data Type: REG_DWORD [Dword Value]  // Value Name: RPGlobalInterval
        Setting for Value Data: [0 = Disabled / 1 = Enabled]
        Exit Registry and Reboot

        Change Restore Point Retention Lifespan

        [Start] [Run] [Regedit]
        Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore
Modify/Create the Value Data Type(s) and Value Name(s) as detailed below.
Data Type: REG_DWORD [Dword Value] // Value Name: RPLifeInterval
        Setting for Value Data: [0 = Disabled / 1 = Enabled]
        Exit Registry and Reboot[/edit]

The decimal setting is given in seconds so that system restore points are made very 24 hours. The system restore points are retained for a full 90 days.

It would be interesting to know if you find something similar on your ME system.

If you do you would have to increase the decimal setting for the Creation Frequency by a factor of 7.

I have subsequently reduced the retention time on this XP system to 30 days after reading the above.

Alternatively, and especially if it is a question of drive-space, you could make a drive image and turn system restore off.

Or, if your drive is partitioned, you could use another backup program such as NERO's BackItUp to backup your system to the partition.

Turn it off, Microsoft only used it on girlie operating systems anyway.

Bad Idea, I use it occasionally when something that has always worked suddendly and misteriously don't work anymore.

              To Ex member.

No, there is no such setting.
I don't understand your second answer about making a drive image (sorry, I'm not a pro.).
