100% HDD usage for a few minutes after boot
    « on: July 10, 2021, 12:27:46 AM »
    Hi,

A few months ago, after owning my laptop for a couple of years, whenever I started Windows, everything would be slow for a good 5 to 10min.
Task Manager shows HDD at 100% capacity, mostly between processes like PC DOCTOR and ANTI MALWARE SERVICES.
At the time, I ended up performing a Recovery and reinstalled a fresh copy of Windows using the factory recovery.

Fast forward a couple of weeks ago, and the same thing started again...
How can I find out what's the cause?

    Running Windows 10 (x64) on a Dell Inspiron 15
    i5-7300HQ
    8GB DDR4
    nVidia GTX1050 4GB GDDR5
    Dell 0TXG2N
    1TB HDD Hybrid (Toshiba MQ02ABD100H)

    Thank you,

    SuperDave

Hello and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

    1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
    2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
    3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
    4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
    5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
    6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
    7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.

Publish a Snapshot using Speccy, taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website and download the free version on the left. Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot. You will see the following prompt:

I don't see anything that would be causing this problem. You could try stopping those processes in TaskManager to see if it makes any difference. I will move this thread to the Win 10 forum to see if anyone else can provide some help.

Stopping the processes will just make them restart again right after

        Ok, Thank you Dave!

        1) I suggest you uninstall PC Doctor.
        2) Check in Task Manager for any apps scheduled to run background scans.
        3) Boot to safe mode. Does the same thing happen?
