Inconsistency in Video icons
« on: November 28, 2022, 06:31:44 PM »
In x32Win10ProV22H2, the three settings for whether thumbnails or player- generic icons show for videos, all seem to be global : they're in 1. Folder Options;View; 2, Control panel;System & in 3. Local Group Policy. However, on my external drive which is an SSD connected through USB, the icons are thumbnails, but on my external magnetic drive connected through SATA, the video icons are MOSTLY generic. How can THOSE generics be changed to thumbnails ?

It sounds like you are trying to change the settings for which icons are shown for videos on your external drives. In x32Win10ProV22H2, the three settings for showing thumbnails or generic icons for videos are global, meaning that they apply to all drives on your system, including external drives.

To change the settings for showing thumbnails or generic icons for videos on your external drives, you will need to access the Folder Options, View settings in Windows Explorer. Here are the steps to do this:

Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the drive that contains the videos you want to change the icons for.

Click on the "View" tab at the top of the window.

In the "View" tab, click on the "Options" button in the upper-right corner of the window.

In the "Folder Options" window, click on the "View" tab.

Scroll down to the "Advanced Settings" section, and under the "Files and Folders" heading, find the "Always show icons, never thumbnails" setting.

If this setting is checked, uncheck it to show thumbnails for videos on your external drive. If this setting is already unchecked, you do not need to make any changes.

Click "OK" to save your changes and close the "Folder Options" window.

After making these changes, the icons for your videos on your external drive should be thumbnails instead of generic icons. Keep in mind that these settings are global, so they will apply to all videos on all drives on your system.

"these settings are global, so they will apply to all videos on all drives on your system." EXCEPT that, as stated in my post, despite those global settings, different external drives (details in the post) give different outcomes.
