FireFOX? FireDOG!!!
« on: March 09, 2006, 07:51:38 PM »
You know how when you were a kid, you'd put dog poop in a paper bag, put it on someone's doorstep, light it on fire, ring the doorbell, and run?

And then they'd panic when they opened the door, and stomp the fire out, getting dog poop all over their shoes?

Yeah, well if you open up your door and you see Firefox 1.5 on your doorstep, DON'T DO ANYTHING!!! It's a flaming dog poop of an upgrade!

Sorry, I had to vent.

Anyone else having problems with it?
Dan: You're gonna need to get someone to fix my computer.                     Kim: What's wrong with it?                     Dan: It's in several pieces on my floor.

It has already been updated to iron out some bugs.

It is much slower on most pages. Even text pages. Some pages it never loads. Ironically, even in its own help forum. Particular, all of its diagnostic pages. (Of course, that server could be crashing under the weight of all the people using it all of a sudden!)

Even in its help forum, the mods are saying, "Well, if you want to look at Yahoo pages, you should use IE"!

My home "page" is six tabs. Only ONCE since "upgrading" have all six loaded correctly. That NEVER happened before.

And even after you quit, it still shows up in Task Manager - Processes.

I really really like 1.0.7. But right now the only thing 1.5 has over IE is that it's not IE.

What are your system specs? You might not be able to run FF with that many tabs going at once. Please include:

        Operating system
        CPU
Hard drive size (needed so we know if your cache is too small)
        Memory
Anything else that might be helpful

Yeah, but the point is it USED to work, before "UP"grading.

        But, just for sag, here:

        Intel Pentium M
        1.6 GHz
        504 MB RAM
        Win XP SP2
        80 Gig HD, 42% Free

        Defragged on Tuesday

        Virus Free (according to Norton)
Adware Free (according to Ad-Aware and Spybot)
Same results with or without Norton Firewall

I know this isn't a super high-performance machine, but it's got to be in the 90th percentile of home users...

In the words of Bobby D., "It ain't me, babe. Uh, no, no, no, it ain't me babe."

Tonight I am uninstalling everything and starting over.

Which seems like a lot of work for the world's easiest browser, but hey. What else is a young good looking guy going to do on a Friday night?

It's not the best in the world, but it should be enough to run FireFox. I don't know about 6 tabs, though. If you're going to reinstall, good luck. Let us know if it works after that.  8-)

I regularly have ten to twenty tabs open on less well-specified hardware running Firefox 1.5.0.1.  No problems.

That said, if you want a really quick browser that uses the Gecko rendering engine, you need to try K-Meleon.  Now that's one fast, competent browser.
