Unknown program running causing minimizing
« on: March 13, 2006, 10:33:01 PM »
Ok, to start off, I have used many adware/spyware/antivirus programs,  adaware, spybot, norton, free online scans etc etc..  I have no viruses or spyware to date.. the worst anything ever found was a small handfull of cookies which are beyond minor.

Whats been happening (been going on for quite some time.. honestly don't even remember if its been going on since i built the computer last summer)  is that every so often.. which seems to be random, sometimes happens twice in 5 minutes.. sometimes not for an hour..  a program will run or seems to run cause a program bar comes up on the windows taskbar for just a second, but with no idenitifying text.. just a bar with an old school program/exe icon..  whenever I play games this instantly causes the game to minimize which is highly annoying.  it also happens when i'm not playing games..

I started wondering if it was possible it was somehow related to not pressing a key on the keyboard for a few minutes.. because every single time i play a game and i get up and leave it for 3minutes.. i come back to a minimized game.. however, i can be sitting here typing constantly as i am typing this at this very moment and it will happen.. so i'm really totally out of ideas.

I use Norton Internet Security but i have totally disabled all notifications because i thought that was the culprit at first.. not the case apparently, the only other programs running other than standard windows required processes are a temperature monitoring program and an overclocking program.  all other programs and processes are disabled.  I've even used a program to help me analyze all remaining processes to insure that they are all legit and not trojans or anything..

If anyone has any suggestions or thoughts or ever heard of anything like this before.. please let me know.

Oh.. I suppose I should mention.. this mystery program only minimizes anything that is being run in full screen.. if it's running when say i'm on IE or word.. it doesnt minimize them.. just my games (thats all i do in full screen).. but its terrible when i'm trying to relax after a day's work  :(

Edit:  Almost forgot,  using Windows XP Pro (fully updated)

So did you disable the temperature monitoring program and overclocking program?

    I'll try that now.

Use the Event Viewer to see what's been happening.

I opened it, the security audit is empty but system and app's are massive.. any hint as to what i should be looking for, it basically looks like a log of processes, all of which appear to be standard

    edit:  wierd quote system :/

You know... I have the same issue myself... It never bothered me that much though... With me, it does the same with minimizing games, but it won't minimize Word... It shows on the taskbar for that 1 second though... No text... I never had time to look... I'll try to catch it in the event log, but it seems to be random, so it might be hard... I'll post my results as well...

Ok, it just happened, so I rushed over to the event viewer, and there's NO LOG of anything happening in ANY category for the part 3 or so minutes... This little program that flashed on the taskbar came-up at 5:16 PM. I'll continue to refresh and see if it shows-up...

There is no such listing of any applications at that time in the Event log... None for that whole hour really... I wonder why it won't appear?

I have NO idea what the program is... It must be software related, as I'm pretty sure that my other computer (just wiped clean and so far has only been used to install security software and run updates) has the program too... I'm not sure, but I think I noticed it once...

Well, it has since showed-up a few times, but nothing is shown in the Event Log... What can this be?!

Check your incoming firewall logs for portscans at the same time.

I have been suffering from this as well, no events in event viewer, no port attacks when it happened. Can anyone help as it ruins any games I am playing.
