    No.
I don't think 98 is bootable anyway so you will need a 98 bootdisk and a working cdrom.

Some 98 versions are bootable, but some are not. In any case they can ALL be booted with a boot disk, available for free at www.bootdisk.com.  ;)

eiocan ...... Could you detail exacxtly what you have done .......be as specific as possible.

Did you get a bootdisk that is for win 98 ?
Does it include the generic drivers as well as the F disk function ?

Put in the CD ROM and type setup and press Enter. Does that get it going? If not type in d:setup and press Enter
If that doesn't work, keep increasing the letters.

Make sure you have a boot disk with CDROM support
Put it in the floppy drive and boot the PC
When the boot up is complete you should be at the A:\ prompt
Put your windows CD in the CDROM drive
        Type E:\setup
When the setup program offers to make a boot disk, click cancel
Remove the floppy and continue setup
If you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything.

Download a proper boot disk from www.bootdisk.com then follow the directions.

You mention XP now, but we started out the discussion with Win98. If it really is XP we have to start ALL over! Please clarify.

Look again, if you change it then boot to the XP disk and your good to go.

The XP CD can make all the boot disks you need (It is a set, not just one!), or you can get the set at www.bootdisk.com

I'd be looking in bios to find out why the cdrom isn't detected.

Since that is so (and nice to know that now!) it will not ever boot from CD, so you will have to go the boot disk route.

Since you never said, what are the specifics on the machine. (We should have been given that long before as well.)

You may want to be in touch with the PC Beginner program you paid $29.95 for. It sounds like it should do everything except brew coffee.

              Good luck!

Most 98 cds wasnt bootable anyway so youll need to boot from the floppy drive with a bootdisk floppy thats got generic dos cd drivers. A mouse driver will be handy too.
