Completely computer illiterate...
« on: April 15, 2006, 01:55:39 PM »
:-/  Sorry. I hope someone will help me.

In not-so-technical terms, can someone tell me if it is possible to erase (or override, if necessary) the sound on a video?

I made a video with my webcam and it recorded voice; I want to eliminate that, and have it be silent, or add some other sound/words, if that's what need be done.

The video is saved on my computer.

I have an Windows XP, and that's about all I know  :-[

Thank you to anyone who can help!

Ok, this is easy. I'm going to guess that you are using Microsoft Movie Maker to produce this video? If so, open Movie maker, and import your video. Next, select your clip that you just imported. Click on the button at the bottom that says "Show Timeline". Just under that button you will now see Video with a + (plus) sign next to it. Click on the + sign. Two new options will now appear. You will see a gray bar next to audio (on the right side). Click on it so that it is selected, and press the delete key. Your sound is now gone. If you would like to add a different sound to this clip/movie, let me know and I will walk you through that as well.

wow, thanks for the quick response!

I did not use that microsoft moviemaker thing. Don't even know if I have it. I do have something like that, but I have no clue how to even find out.

But, I made my movie with a logitech webcam. It came with a disc to put it on the computer. So when I take pictures, I just upload (or download ?  :-[) it to a file.

 :(

You, know, I think I'm just hopeless  :D  I'll probably not be able to explain it all correctly.

That's okay, and thank you so much for trying.

this is a wonderful resource, though, and I'm sure I'll be back if I need some other more reasonable help :)

Ok. Unless someone removed it, click on Start -> All Programs -> Windows Movie Maker, If it is not there, do a search for movie maker. If the search finds it, click on the file with the film next to it (easiest way to show you which one is the program). If you have it in the start menu, just open it.

Well, what you can do is this. If you saved the clip you made with the webcam, click on the link on the right  (inside Movie Maker) that says import video. Just find the file and import it. It will display on your clips at the top. You would then drag and drop the clip into a square on the storyboard. Now, if you didn't save the clip from the webcam, then you can always capture it from Movie Maker. You would have to act the whole thing out again however. Let me know if you saved teh webcam file or not.

Ok. You're almost there. Click on the Audio, which is just below Transition. Directly to the right of the text you will see some text in a box with arrows > text < . It's usually the name of your clip. Just click on that text and press the delete key. This will delete your audio from the clip.

:-[ Okay, well nothing seemed to be right so I dragged the video into the timeline box  :-[

So I now see the video is in this audio field; but when I place teh cursor over the video name (there are no <  >), it turns into the little scratchy hand  :-/  so it's not clicakable

sorry to be so dense

I right clicked it with the hand, and a list of choices came up. Delete was one; so I clicked it. The sound is still there, though...:(

When I click on the video name in the audio field, it plays without sound; when I click on the video up top, it remains the same  :-?

Ok, saving is easy. First, tell me how people will view it. Will people see this on the computer? In a DVD player?

I just want to save it on my computer like it is now, actually. Then, I can send it to people if I want.

It only works (without sound) when i click the file name in the Audio field. The video, itself, continues to play with sound...

What file format is this? By that, I mean is it a WMV, a AVI, or MPG? Probably an AVI, but I gotta know. If it is AVI, I know a program that does exactly what you want, and it's available for download. :)

You can find out by hovering the mouse over the video file.

lindaloups, do you have MSN/Windows Messenger? Also, Dilbert, right now it will save as a movie project file. Linda will have to make the final video a different way, which I'm hoping to show her over remote assistance.

Ok. I just added you to Yahoo! but I'm waiting for your approval. By the way, MSN/Windows messenger requires an e-mail address in order for me to add you.
