    Connecting to internet
    « on: April 20, 2006, 06:25:24 PM »
I am having an inordinate amount of trouble connecting to the Net. I installed drivers, I get a connection to the router, but after a few minutes I lose the connection to the Internet and only a reboot seems to work. I was in the middle of downloading Everest and the d/l got corrupted. I'm on another PC; I'll download Everest and give the details. For now: I have a Linksys Wireless-G PCI adapter.

Seeing as how it;s only 11 Mbps, I'm guessing this is a Wireless B connection?

Yeah, but my adapter is compatible with the B router, I was told. And it was working fine until the Great Format. (Actually, that's what I'm going to call it from now on. Then I got it set up, it worked OK, then it stopped. But some change that Microsoft's troubleshooter had me do worked. Halt, rewind, replay. Microsoft... worked???

It's doing it again! I have the error here:

I've downloaded DynDNS Updater. Not sure if it will help, but it's worth a shot.

Can you run the router's diagnostics?

Ok, so you're randomly losing your connection. Here's one way to fix that, which will hopefully help. Turn off the computer and disconnect the power cable going to both, the router and the modem. Leave power off for 15-30 seconds. Plug-in the modem, and let it configure itself for about 25 seconds. Now, restore power to the router, and give it about the same amount of time to configure. You cay now turn on the computer and see if this helps. I know sometimes my modem acts funny, and it will make the internet slow, or randomly disconnect, etc. Sometimes if you just power it off and restart it everything works fine.

I will do that after school today.

Funny thing: I had two routers available last night when I started having issues again. I tried to connect to it so I could follow it and get an idea of whose it is - but it vanished and I only had the home router. :-?

This is the pain of wireless networking.  So far I have avoided wireless networks.  Problems like this don't fill me with enthusiasm for the wireless medium...

              I found out the issue...

You know how I saw another router to connect to? Well, our neighbor decided to use our router. A... talk... with them convinced them that stealing the bandwith I need to use the Internet is not cool. (You know how in one house, if two showers are going at the same time, it becomes a battle for hot water? Same concept as in toilet flushing during a shower - and apparently, bandwith.)

You gotta love neighbors... >:( Consider my router password-protected.
A breakdown of how our Internet DSL is set up:

A PC has the router, and is the "host".
Two desktops run on Linksys Wireless-G adapters. (Mine and another)
Two laptops have the same/a similar connection (Mom and Pop)

No clue what the neighbors have...

Connect to it, steal their bandwith, and find out  ;)  ;D If they have a network of their own why are they tapping into yours? File diggers? Or do they just see yours as a faster connection?

lol  The joy of having a wireless router.  ;)  What other security measures have you taken to ensure network safety? Not exactly from just your neighbors either...

Uh, no, I don't think so. I live in rural Oregon, and don't expect anyone to be able to crack the PW. Einstein need not worry: Nobody around this town is threatening to oust him as smartest man ever. ;D

But I will do that if this problem arises again. That and change the PW...

I will keep it in mind, but I also will remember the following:

The neighbors in question are about 50+ years of age (you may think a stern talk with near-seniors about bandwith is a sign I have no heart, but these guys are real jerks). Their kid is a 5th grader with the numeral equivalent of a B- average. What are the chances they can even figure out our 10-character PW, let alone know any software to help them do it? Not high, I imagine. :D
