Evil Computer with Personality?
« on: April 28, 2006, 01:14:27 PM »
Hello everyone. My computer, which is realitivly new, seems to have a lazy personality. It only boots up when it wants. I usually have to shut it off, and wait 30 seconds and boot up, and this happens several times. When it fails to boot up, it will either freeze at the bios(?)(Phoenix Award) screen, some screen after that I cant identify, and then the windows loading screen. IF it doesnt freeze at one of the screens, it will sometimes freeze at a black screen. Its not fun having to boot up 5 or 6 times just to use my comp...please help  :'( :'( :'(

could be a multitude of things..

Bad HDD, bad windows install, Bios settings out of whack.. voltage jumpers on the board can be off..

Any more info on what it's doing or more indepth about the computer itself?

Hmm, come to think of it, everytime I boot it successfully, it asks me what settings to boot it on, safe mode, last known good configuration and boot normally.  Could it be, maybe that it is caused by my anti-virus thing, AVG? It asks me to change something everytime I install/download...

as for the computer itself, its got windows home XP, a nvidia graphics card(forgot which one), 1gb ram, 200gb hd and evga  nForce4 motherboard

Edit: Also, when I do boot up, it will either give a short beep, a long beep, or continuous short beeps.

Did anyone set a time for the computer to turn on by itself in the BIOS?

    AWARD BIOS BEEP CODES

Below are Award BIOS Beep codes that can occur. However, because of the wide variety of different computer manufacturers with this BIOS, the beep codes may vary.

    Beep Code Description
1 long, 2 short Indicates a video error has occurred and the BIOS cannot initialize the video screen to display any additional information
    Any other beep(s) RAM problem.

If any other correctable hardware issues, the BIOS will display a message.

So it might be a video problem? Should I reinsert the video card?

Thats true, It booted up fine just now though, so I'll see if it dies on me again later, and if it does, I'll reinsert.
