Red and blue lines on screen
« on: May 07, 2006, 03:23:26 AM »
Hi! I can't explain my problem well, so here are two screenshots:

Even BIOS is like this. Lots of strange, chinese-like things instead of characters...
The Windows load screen, games, everything looks strange!! What happened to my video card? Yesterday I used the computer a lot, then it just got well!!! I could play, watch videos, everything went back to normal. But when I turned the computer back on, it was bad again.... PLz help, what is the problem?? My VGA is radeon 9800 pro 128MB, I bought it in february.

Sorry for my english. I'm hungarian.

    Try swapping monitors.

It can't be a monitor problem, I could take screenshots...

When did this start? Which operating system are you using? Do you have virus and Spyware protection? Have you made any changes to your system recently? Have you tried reinstalling/updating your video card drivers?

    Yesterday.
    I'm using Win XP.
    Yes, both.
    Errr, no... no changes
I reinstalled the one that came with the card. I downloaded a new driver, but it got worse, I could'nt even start games, movies, nothing!

It sounds like a failed video card. How old is it? Was it overclocked at any point?

I'm not sure what taking screen shots has to do with not being a monitor problem but Oh well.
Swapping monitors is a very easy thing to do (for most people), it eliminates the monitor as a source of the problem and at the same time checks the security of the plug in connection assuming the person plugs it in correctly.

Next.... check your device manager, if there's a problem you will see it.

A problem caused by a monitor would not be reproduced in a screen capture.  Think about it.  ;)

I concur with GX1_Man.  Graphics card is faulty.

You're right, funny how when I hit that print screen button it felt like the computer was taking a snapshot of the display, I guess I have never really thought much past that.
I did notice that those little rainbow coloured dots created by sneezing didn't show up in a screen capture though, I just never questioned...why?  :D

Well everything is OK now, the card was bad. They will change it to a 6600 GT, is it good?

Looks like a mid-range, slightly old (now) graphics card.  The question is not "is it good" though - the question is "is it better or worse than the card that was orginally in the PC"?  With a bit of luck the shop isn't trying to fleece you and you'll end up with a graphics card upgrade for free.  :)
