XP fails to boot
« on: May 13, 2006, 07:52:15 AM »
Whenever i boot up the pc, it only gets to the windows xp boot screen and then stops. So i have to manually switch off. When i boot up again it goes onto the safe mode select screen. If i select "last known good configeration" it will boot up normally, except that found new hardware pops up,(this does'nt happen every time) eventually installing Matrox Graphics Millenium G200 AGP. I can then use the pc as normall. When i shut down and then reboot it does the same and so i end up booting with last known good configeration.

All scans with Adaware, Spybot Search&Destroy and AVG as well as online scans with Panda and Bitdefender came up clean.

Any help would be greatly appreciated..

Odd...

Tell us more about your graphics card, M/b, and make of your PC with a model

Have you tried system restore?  Start>All Progs>Acc>Sys tools>Sys Rest

Do you get any beeps/sounds from the case?

Have you opend the case/installed new hardware prior to this happening?

Is Your Graphics Card built into the M/b?

Have you tried to remove all USB devices then boot up?

Yes i did do system restore, but it did'nt improve things at all.
I also used the c d repair console, and now i only have 1 restore point.

I get 1 short beep, although it has done this since i first got it about 10 months ago (brought secondhand)

Have tried to boot with all u s b devices removed.

Had trouble installing a 256mb pc100 memory stick. It is currently in place but is only picked up as a 128mb stick. If it is removed it still has the same problems.

Hope that this is helpfull.

I decided to formatt and start over, but xp would not install. So i thought that i would install 2k then upgrade to xp.
I was able to install 2k, which i was unable to update easily as had problems with usb bandwidth. So my broadband external modem would'nt connect.

I then upgraded too xp, and all is well. Just hope it continues to be problem free.
I have set automatic updates to notify only, and i check them out prior to downloading and/or installing.

Thanks for all help.  [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

By the way, you don't have to install 2000 to install XP in normal machines. It sounds like yours has other issues which will need to be addressed sooner or later.;)
