Computer Shutting Self Down Upon Startup. plz help
« on: August 17, 2004, 02:53:40 AM »
Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP1
AMD XP2000+
768mb ram
motherboard info: www.ecsusa.com/products/l7vmm.html
LITE-ON LTR-52246S  cd-rw
SONY DVD-ROM DDU1611
Vinyl AC'97 Codec Combo Driver (WDM)
NVIDIA GeForce2 MX
Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC
D-Link DFE-530TX PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter (rev.A)

Ok.. now the problem.
My computer shuts it self down whenever I try to reboot or start it up upon the Windows XP loading screen.
It'll look as if its JUST about to load Windows, and then shut down.
If I want to start the computer up again, I have to remove the power cable out of the back of the power supply, flick the switch, wait a few seconds, flick the switch, plug the cable back in, and then try pressing the power button.
It will repeat the shutting down 3 to 5 times before sucessfully starting up into Windows.

What I've done so far:
flashed the bios
re-set everything (took everything out of the computer case, and placed it back in)
removed all cards (excluding sound which is onboard)
removed all cd/dvd drives
swapped out the memory
replaced the power supply with 3 different models (same problem persists)
i formatted numerous times, and tried Windows XP, Windows 2000
problem occurs on each OS.
also replaced HD

So I'm completely stumped ladies and gents...
I'm taking CSOM a course offered at the local college in September, so I'd like to have this issue resolved promptly!
Please help!

You could try to reset the BIOS or load failsafe/standard defaults.

Your proplem can also be caused by a bad power supply. I too had this problem, and after flashing the BIOS and wiping the hard drive and doing a fresh install, I resorted to my A plus training only to discover in one of my books thsat a bad power supply can cause this exact problem. What happens is teh supply usually has a slight short a causes a glitch when booting up thus resulting in a reboot. Hope this helps. It corrected my problem.

Have you tried to completely reset the BIOS by taking out the CMOS battery or shortcircuiting the CMOS jumper?
