computer locks during bootup

P4 1500 windows xp home 640 ram 128 video. Computer locks during bootup on the black xp loading screen. It will load in safe mode.  I' ve run spyware doctor, and regmechanic and can find no problems??

What happened prior to this? Can you do a system restore to a point before this?

when in safe mode i try to go to help an support it gives me an error message  'WINDOWS CANNOT OPEN HELP AND SUPPORT BECAUSE A SYSTEM SERVICE IS NOT RUNNING    TO FIX HIS PROBLEM START THE SERVICE HELP AND SUPPORT.  I have no idea how to do this.

Since you can start in Safe Mode, one of the programs or hardware device drivers might be the cause.  Did you recently install new software or add a new hardware device, like a new video card or other expansion card?
