Hey, where'd my CD-RW and D: go?
« on: July 18, 2006, 12:45:10 AM »
I have no idea how to fix this, perhaps one of you guys could help me...

For some reason, I cannot access my D: and CD-RW. I go to "My Computer" and they don't exist. I put in a CD into my D: and it doesn't do anyting. I think this happened after my computer automatically restarting when I installed video software onto my computer.

Please help me get back my drives. Any help would be wonderful.

What software did you install? What if you uninstall it? Does that fix it? Can you do a system restore to before the installation?

The software is DXG-506V Ver. 1.01. I installed the software intitled "Drivers" and "VideoWorks6". I didn't get to installing "Mr. Photo 3" because I was no longer able to access my D:. As you suggested, I tried uninstalling the software - that did nothing - and I don't know how to restore the computer to what it was before hand.

Any more advice?

Did your software have a cd burning capability?
Google cdgone and see if that applies to you.

Edit: Research it first & don't forget the part about backing up the registry before running it.

Are there any problems showing up in your Device Manager?

There are no errors in the device manager.

For kicks, I thought I'd do a few more things: I did a spyware check and nothing was out of the ordinary, I did a virus check and there were two trojan horses (which I got rid of but nothing happened afterwards).

Also, I thought I'd check the disc manager and I cannot add the drives I need.

I remember having a simular problem with my previous computer; I took the computer to Future Shop to have it fixed by a guy named Dale. What he did was, as the computer was going through it's start up, he pressed F12 (or F8, or something like that), and had gotten into a meat and potatos OS where he added the missing drives. Unfortunetly, I don't remember how Dale fixed my computer very well, so I cannot repeat it to fix my computer. But if this gives any of you people any ideas of how to fix things on my computer, then awsome.

      Any more ideas?

F8 will get you into Safe Mode, perhaps that was it?
Do the drives show up in your Device Manager?

Perhaps I'm interpreting what "Device Manager" is. I think it's "Windows Task Manager", but this manager doesn't show any of the drives. So, maybe your talking about something completely different.

Mind you, I'm not terribly computer savvy.

          Try Start>Settings>Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager.

Thank you for helping me out with finding the Device Manager.

Both drives are listed under DVD/CD-Rom Drives. But they both have a yellow exclamation point on them. I don't know what that means, but I thought you should know.

          What should I do now?

Go back to your Device Manager, double click on your cdrom, select the drivers tab and uninstall the drivers.
OK out then re-boot your computer & Windows will detect the 'new' cdrom & install the drivers for you. Sometimes keeping your fingers crossed will assist this process. :)

Well, I reinstalled the drives, but they still have yellow exclaimation marks on them, they still wont read any CD I put into them, and they're still not accessable in My Computer.

On the bright side: I know what a Device Manager is now. So, I think we're getting closer  ;).

Download, unzip, install & run Everest, select Computer Summary and push the Report button.
Save the Report as a text file then copy & paste it here in the forum.

A question or two, when you tried the cdgone patch were you logged on as Admin and did it ask you to re-boot on completion?
Are the two drives recognised in BIOS?

Wow, this is going to take me forever to cut and paste. Is there anything in particular you're looking for so that I can give you that section and not drown this form with possibly useless information?

A question or two, when you tried the cdgone patch were you logged on as Admin and did it ask you to re-boot on completion?
Are the two drives recognised in BIOS?

I had to register in order to download the patch, but I don't know about being logged on as "Admin". After I added the patches, I was not asked to re-boot.

              What is BIOS?

I was going to ask what Operating System you had but thought I'd kill two birds with one stone by getting a little more info on your computer at the same time. :D
At least we won't have to ask you for any further computer details. LOL

I'm not convinced you applied the cdgone patch properly, can you tell us what you did after downloading it?

Hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and see who you are logged on as.
Then Start>Settings>Control Panel>Users & Passwords to see what rights you have as that user.

Well, I did press Summary... Maybe I'm missing something. Oh well, I guess you got what you need out of that. :P

After downloading the patch onto my desktop (which is automatic), I read the read me and found that it didn't give very good instructions; just a bit of an explaination of what these patches are. I accidentally double clicked on cdgone (I'm a spaz, what can I say), and then I clicked on EditReg. After those two were done I was left wondering: "is that it?"

I am logged in as "Owner" apparently, with "Active" status. I'm not sure where I should be looking to find out my rights as "Owner" but by my user name it says "Computer Administrator"... Is that what you're looking for?

Re-run the cdgone.reg file, if double clicking on it opens a text file then right click on it & select merge with registry or something like that.
Then re-boot after the file has run.
                  Don't run the editreg file.

It only gives me the option of opening it's text file.

Read the Read Me First text from the cdgone zip file and you will see what editreg has done.
You are supposed to be able to right click a .reg file & choose 'merge' but it appears there is something wrong with this option.
We will have to try & find (Google) a way around this before we can proceed.
Did you backup your registry before running the patches?

This thread has gone far afield, so let's back up a bit.

In Device Manager, what are the errors shown by the exclamation marks?  There  will be a description of what the problem is.

Do you have a real Windows CD if that becomes necessary?

And DID you back up the registry?

Good thought GX1_Man, I expect there should be an error code too.
I'd also like to get Kelly's file associations sorted out too, the problem is that there's 2 registry editors to choose from, I'm not 100% sure which one is the default for XP.
It's either regedit or regedt32, I suspect the latter.

It looks like both those fixes & the cdgone patch all do the same thing, remove the data value from upperfilters & lowerfilters.

                           :-? - "Wha...?"

I don't know what you're talking about... So: yeah!

For some reason, I cant find my Windows XP CD. I'm not sure if that's relevant, but I said it.

On Device Manager, I only see the yellow exclaimation marks over the drive icons. It doesn't show any text explaination of the error beside the drive.

And I don't know how to back up a registry. Why? Because I may be slightly stupid, or lazy, or angry... Probably the latter.

Though I am trying out that http://www.theeldergeek.com/restore_missing_cd_or_dvd_drive.htm right now. Wish me luck.

                          YAY!!!!!!!!!!!

Finally, I got my drives back and they're fully functional!

But are there any reprocussions that I'll get from taking out a value?

Yes. And it worked just great. But I don't exactly know what I deleted and whether what I deleted has much importance.

Just you wait, my computer will become posessed the next time I turn it on.
