How did you "install" it?  Open Device Manager.  Do you see any yellow triangles?

Right click My Computer and select Properties.  Click on the Hardware tab, then click on Device Manager.  You should see an item named Sound, video and game controllers.  Click on the + symbol to expand it.  Do you see an item with a name ending in "Audio Device"?  Do you see any yellow triangles anywhere in this panel, i.e. in Device Manager?  They indicate a problem.

I found the Device Manager

Under Other Devices it says....Multimedia Audio Controller and it has an exclamation mark on it.  When I click on that it tells me there are no drivers installed.

I did download it and intall it and it then prompted me to restart my computer which I did.

Still the same problem....

Any suggestions?

Again, how did you install it?  Do you know where the downloaded driver file is located on your hard drive?  If not, search for it.

When I go to Add New Hardware....it doesnt detect it

Then when the list comes up and I click on Multimedia

The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

I'm still trying to find where I installed it.

Let's focus on the Realtek Audio 5.10.0.5370 file; it's clearly a sound driver.  When you downloaded, did you select Save or Run?  If Run, download it again, select Save and save it to your desktop, or make note of exactly what folder you save it to so that you find it later.

OK...I am literally going crazy over this problem....I've been dealing with this all day!!!!!

I did as you suggested and saved it to the desktop.  When I ran it to install it what appeared is a program that will play music (similiar to windows Medai player)....but still no sound!!!

If I do a system restore....could that possibly get my sound back?

What's going on now?  I don't think you needed to get the Intel driver, but probably no harm was done by downloading it.

If you're ready to try installing the sound driver from the Device Manager screen, open Device Manager, select Multimedia Audio Controller, right click on it and select Update Driver, then browse to the file you downloaded.  When the panel appears asking you, "Can Windows connect ...", answer No.  Go to next screen and select Install from a list or specific location.  Then, browse to the downloaded file and let Windows install it.  Let us know how it went.

By the way, when was the last time you had sound?  Do you have a Restore date preceeding that date?  What happened that caused your sound to malfunction?

carlap-

You now have two threads going, this one and:

http://www.computerhope.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?num=1154362308/0#0

and you are PM'ing me asking for help. Stop the madness, this is all too confusing. That's why we suggest one posting only about a problem. Now you have multiple posts and responders, some of which know nothing about the others, and you still haven't gotten anywhere.

Sorry but I couldn't find the other posting....I'm quite new at this.

I ended up going to Help and Support in Windows and clicking on Tools and then My Computer Information.  The sound card listed was the Realtek AC97 Audio.  I have now downloaded the driver and am going to try and install it as instructed.  I'll let you know how that goes!!
