Word Save as prob
« on: August 01, 2006, 04:19:50 AM »
Whenever I click on 'Save' in word, it prompts for 'Save as' even after I have saved the file.

Any clues?

With the lack of information we can only guess. Are you referring to pressing the "save" icon on the button bar?

My mistake...accept my apologies for that.
Yeah I was referring to the save button on the icon bar.

Has this worked right in the past?  When did it change?

When you hover your mouse over that icon, does the little text notifcation appear and say "Save (Ctrl + S)"?  Or, does it say Save As?

Yeah it did work right in the past.
The day I posted this problem, it was acting like this.  Yes it does show 'Save as' when I hover my mouse over the 'Save' icon.

Ok, let's try this.  Right click on an open/empty area at the top of Word, where the toolbars are located.  You should see "Customize" at the bottom of that list.  Select it.  Now, with the Customize panel still open, right click on the Save icon on Word's toobar and Delete it.

Now, go back to the Customize panel and click on File on the left side, under Categories.  Next, scroll down the left panel, under Commands, and locate Save.  Left click on it and drag it to where you want it on the toolbar.

Now, close the Customize panel and test the Save icon.  Does it work right?

Sorry boss, it aint working.  Could it be a problem with the Normal.dot template?  Just a guess, I am not that proficient.

When ever you save a Doc for the First Time you get the Save As Prompt,

Just to test this , save the Doc ,with the Save as , make a Change and click the Save icon, and Tell me if it Still gos to save as

To rule out Normal.dot, find it (with Word closed), rename it, then restart Word.  Word will create a new Normal.dot.  Any change?

Thanks for all the suggestions, but a really strange thing happened today, it started working fine.  And I have no clue as to what made it work!
    Thanks again to everyone!

Template files generally don't allow you to just save, especially on old office programs.
You will always have to "Save As" a template when you modify it. In fact, I think templates are "Read Only" when read by MSWORD.

Not quite.  How would anyone ever edit a template?  ;)
Only able to visit the forums sporadically, sorry.

Not true.  You do not need to use "Save As" to save a change to a template.  I just tried this with Word 2003.  If I open a template, modify it and then click Save, the file is saved as a template, not a .doc file.  To change it to a regular Word Document, I would need to select use File, Save As, and select Word Document as the file type.

OLDER Office. How about 97, and 2000?
    Ill do a test

Templates are not supposed to be modified. They are TEMPLATES for making documents. They can be modified, but only after overwriting them.
In Word 2000, you create a template. Then you save it. Then you close it. Then you open it. Then you add some stuff to it. Then you click File>Save and it gives you the Save As window.
Templates can only be saved if you overwrite them in Office 2000
