drastic frames per second drop
« on: August 03, 2006, 09:48:40 PM »
whats up, im having a problem with my pc lately.  i have been experiencing drastic drops in my frames per second on a frequent basis (ie: it will be running CS perfectly at 70-90 fps, and 2 minutes later, will dive to 10 fps for 15 seconds or so.  it will then lock up for a second or two, and come back running at 70-90.  it will do this in frequent cycles of one or two minutes)  i thought it might be a problem with my videocard, but i am running an AOpen 6800gt that has been flawless up to this point.  i have a feeling my pc may be infected, but i was wondering if anyone might know the exact cause.  i have had the system for about 6 months, i defrag regularly, and scan with Grisoft AVG virus protection (which turns up nothing).

if it is a virus, can anyone direct me to a comprehensive means of fixing my problem?

for reference im running: AMD Athlon 64 3700+, 1 gig RAM, AOpen 6800gt, asus sli motherboard, seagate 7200rpm HD

again, it has run flawlessly up until a month ago or so, so i dont believe it is the hardware

any help would be much appreciated, thanks

rolodexA.......   You might try rebooting into safe mode and running your AV from there and see if anying turns up ......   Failing that turning up anything , you should run a scan whith hijack this and post the logfile here for us to have a look at ..........

If you don't know the answer, it isn't a dumb question.

other things to check include, of course, running lavasoft adware and/or spybot to make sure you don't have sh*tware slowing you down. also, check your computer temps and clean out the inside with a can of air to make sure your fans aren't clogged with dust.

Get a firewall, Sygate is nice.
      http://www.comcen.com.au/~fed/sygate.zip

Use Hijackthis to remove all the 01 entries.

      Re-boot.

Realplayer is like a virus, try using realalternative.

Adobe reader is like a virus, try using foxit.

Norton is like a virus, uninstall it & stay with AVG.

Do you really need those messenger programs?
