Security...
« on: August 06, 2006, 12:16:56 PM »
Hi.  My friend sent me email that must open in Windows Media Player(some cutesy thing).  When that opens, a box pops up and says..."Security Settings Prohibit Use of ActiveX Controls" This isn't the first time.....I have tried everything with my settings and it still won't work.  There are no other problems that I know of.  I use Firefox normally, not IE.  I'm lost....A little off topic, I also cannot open attachments in my email--would that be the same problem? Nothing at all happens when I click them. I use Incredimail (I just know someone is gonna tell me that's bad, but I'm addicted!! LOL :P).

I run Windows XP Service Pack 2...Please help!! http://www.computerhope.com/yabbfiles/Templates/Forum/default/exclamation.gif

Now it says "your current security settings do not allow this action".  I'm still trying to view the mail my friend sent.  This is what I get when I click the link which makes Media Player open...

Sorry :-[---What I meant was, that dialogue box opens that says my current security settings won't let me do that action (play whatever the link was my friend sent for  media player)  ....any idea why I can't look at attachments in my email?  Nothing happens at all when I click the attachments....  Does it have to do with the same problem, maybe?

I did that list of things earlier by the way, that's how I got the message above--tried playing the link after I did everything......I hope I explained this ok.... :P

With Outlook and Outlook Express the security settings are easily adjusted. Incredimail alters all of this and leaves you open to many more problems. Perhaps you will need to make some adjustments in the security settings there.

Here are some insights that would certrainly make me want to avoid Incredimail, no questions asked. You say you are attached to it? You may well be attached to spyware and viruses galore, but that's your call.

I would advise reading these ALL the way through.

Here's one "testimonial":

"You may find Incredimail fun and cute as I did but please be aware it lacks stability and does have spyware issues. Mail sent via IM can be traced and tagged as to how many are sent and received. I also was alarmed that a new e-mail address I have which I did not have when I used IM is now receiving the 'spam' IM newsletter!

I amongst several others researched the program and found out we should not have installed it in the first place (and we did have the registered versions!) After the initial uninstall and registry clean we found over 1000 entries left when we used a string search of the registry (it spreads to more files and folders than Norton does) I completely cleaned 2 computers and both had endless leftovers to find in order to make sure it was totally IM free.

Sorry I could not recommend this client to you as I have experienced it first hand and never would want to have this again despite loosing all the cute e-mails. I now use Outlook 2003 and will be installing this again when I upgrade in August."

You'll be better off in the long run. Plain e-mail is not as cutesy, but it is more secure. You would be better off with Thunderbird as well. Just a hint.  ;)
