Hey

this morning whilst i was playing a game my computer changed to a screen that said:

'A PROBLEM HAS BEEN DETECTED AND WINDOWS HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE COMPUTER

KERNEL_STACK_INPUT_ERROR

IF THIS IS THE FIRST TIME YOU HAVE SEEN THIS MESSAGE, RESTART YOUR COMPUTER. IF THIS MESSAGE CONTINUES TO APPEAR FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS:

I tried re-starting and it kept re-appearing. I havent installed any new software or hardware for about 2 months. The game i was playing has been running fine for over a year.

Is this a virus? If so could somebody please give me some help? If it is not could someone please point in the right direction to get some help.

The version of windows on my computer is XP professionl, version 2002, service pack 2

my computer details are AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor
2800+
1.84GHz, 512mb of RAM

The only other thing that has been happening in the last day or so is that my optical mouse keeps turning off and on whilst im using it. (by that i mean it keeps acting like it is being unplugged and then plugged back in, even though nothing is happening to it)

Any help will be greatly appreciated

ok what kind of protection do you have? anti-virus anti-spyware? do you have a real xp cd?

yeah sorry about the other post.

I have EZ Antivirus as my protection but everytime i try to run it or run anything the screen comes up again!

Its not an original cd version of XP either

ok well u need an xp cd just incase you have to reformat, but we might be able to fix this issue. can you get to your account?

if so you might want to download and update some of these programs on this thread:

i use a-adware and spybot search and destroy also ewido.

but have a read if you can get onto your main account that has the admin rights to install programs

lol can you log on to your account( your desktop, but make sure you can install programs on it.)

right click my computer>go to properties>restore tab> check the box that say turn off restore

i have downloadd all the virus checkers etc. I ran two of them but the screen came up again half way through adaware.

However the text has changed. It now reads:
'KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR

and in tech info it says:

'ADDRESS F85DA6F2 BASE AT F85DA5000, DATESTAMP 41107B59'

should i just keep trying to virus scan it or is my computer truelu messed up?

unfortunately yes. about 700 pictures, 1500 songs, and all of my university degree work

ummm.. ok and you rebooted in safe mode rgiht..

try running ewido.

OK.

i re-booted in safe and tried ewido and it crashed to that screen again 3/4 of the through! im starting to think this is gonna cost me a bit!

anything i can try before i give up?

im afraid my pc tech ability doesnt stretch that far! how do i do it?

if i do i wont lose any files etc will I? sorry for sounding like the forest gump of the pc world! lol

its ok.. i was like this when i was very green.

How To reset your bios:

1. turn off your computer unplug it from the back

2. hold in the power button for 15 or so secs (this discharges power thats left in the computer)

3. take the side panel off

4. take out the watch battery

5. turn on the computer (make sure you [highlight]dont[/highlight] plug it back into the wall )for 10 secs turn it off

6. put the battery back in and plug the computer back in and turn it on.

the only thing you will lose is the time

u might have to do a back up of all of your important things and do a reformat and fresh restall..

what kind of computer is it? how long have you had it?

it was built by my brother, he is a computer technician. Ive had it 2 years now, and i know it needs updating but i have so much stuff on it and no idea how to keep it safe

i dont even know the best to back it up!

snooppaulypaul...... The intial error suggests possibly a hardware issue ........
Possibly ...Ram , perhaps a hard drive issue or there may be a connection to the way your mouse is (was ) acting ........
I would be inclined to uninstall that mouse and try a PS/2 mouse to see if theres any change . If its still there , do a scandisk ...and see if anything shows up . Then you might want to run a memory test ........ http://www.memtest86.com/

Have tried to uninstal mouse but it has stopped working altogeher so im not sure if it did it!

ran a scan disk on my c drive but it said 'windows cud not complete it'

then i tried to run a memory test but when i open the software it just says 'the system file is not sutable for running ms_dos'

am i doing something wrong

have figures out (i think) where the problem is! The game i was playing at the time it first crashed is football manager. I have been trying to uninstall it but everytime i do it crashes! is there anyway to get it off my computer or am i stuck with formatting it?

The whole thing sounds FUBAR'ed. A good format and reinstal would have fixed it by now.

How did you try and do the memtest86 test?
Did you extract it to a floppy then boot to that floppy?
A clean install won't fix a hardware problem so I'd try Memtest first.

Well i hadnt tried doing a memtest that way but i have decided to take this opppurtinuty to upgrade my graphics card, motherboard and add extra memory!

With a new motherboard you will need to format and reinstall Windows so this is a good time to address all issues.

hey guys

a short update, i have got a new motherboard and graphics card! however it wasnt any of those that caused a problem nor was it a software problem! It turns out the problem is with my hard drive so i am going to take this oppurtunity to get a bigger hard drive

will keep you informed!

(i am sure that someone had already told me that a complete re-format probabl;y wouldn't do the job!! lol)
