No driver for Multimedia audio device
« on: August 10, 2006, 07:00:28 AM »
I recently did a fresh install of windows 98 on a pc. There is no sound except for the PC beeper.
I went to Control Panel>Add new hardware and it detected "PCI Multimedia Audio Device" Which I understand is the generic term for an audio device which it doesn't recognise. I have onboard audio, but I have no idea what it is called. How do I find out and where can I get the drivers?
//Edit
I am running Windows 98 first edition
500mhz Celeron
62mb RAM

Do you have any details on the model of the PC or the motherboard?

Yours is a cloned combination and not any model by manufacturers like Dell/HP/Acer?
Do you have an internal voice modem?

Its a fairly old Tiny brand PC clone. Doesn't state if it is a specific model. I do have a PCI modem, but it has no output for sound.

OK, I used the driver I found here:

    http://www.soundcard-drivers.com/drivers/130/130168.htm

And installed it, but it still doesn't work. Clicking multimedia in the control panel reveals that there are no sound devices detected, and when I click on Add New Hardware, The PCI Multimedia audo device now has a new name (something like crystalwave or something) has a new icon (A multimedia symbol)and is detected as new but uninstalled harware, becasue the driver has a problem. Windows recommends reinstalling the driver, which does not work.

    Help!

Is that what I told you to do? No. If it is an onboard AC97 you have to locate the motherboard and use the drivers made for it. You did not post the motherboard model, or the report that was asked for, so we are stuck until you do.  ::)

OK, well I see it is a Celeron motherboard with an i810 video adapter, very common for that era, but we still don't know the specific motherboard.

Try running Belarc Adviso (free at www.belarc.com) and see what is on the top right of the report page. It should have your motherboard listed there.

    Post that screem here.

The MSI site is slow right now, but you can stay after it until you get the right audio driver for that board. Here is the main download page:

Ok, I wasn't sure what to download, so I downloaded the sound driver. It didnt look like mine but I fugured it was wirth a try, however, once I had downloaded it I tried to run it, I get a load of questionmarks where it looks like there should be text, and what looks like the install directory is listed as

    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox

What should I do next? I'm at a loss....

That sound driver is the one listed for that motherboard model.

Check to see where you are downloading it to. Why not just make a new directory call Stuff and put it there?

ok, I extracted it to a new directory, and ran the setup file. An error message pops up saying
"Software not supported by this OS"
I downloaded the 9x/ME/2000/xp file, not the NT one.

Sorry for the late reply, I was away.

After looking closer, I see that intel only supports intel boards, and recommends going to the manufacturers website, which I already have but to no avail.

So, I have tried to directly contact MSI, they offered email address for sales (no) marketing (no) and website enquiries (no, but close enough)

So i have emailed the webmaster in a last ditch attempt to sort this out. This is the last driver I need to get my system completely functional and its taking the longest to find :(

I cant afford an upgrade of OS, but I was thinking I could get an old sound card that has support for windows 98?

he problem there would be finding one and a driver.

Disks arrived today. Setup file gave error message saying that my OS wasn't compatible again! However, after some thorough browsing, I did manage to find the install file for a Realtek AC97 driver. It was the closest one on the disk, what with it holding hundreds of different drivers. Installed without a hitch, and I finally heard beautiful music out of my speakers!

Thankyou all for all your help. It is appreciated  :)
