Can't get rid of an application
« on: August 16, 2006, 04:26:11 PM »
I can't delete or even move an application I downloaded, because it says its being used by another program. Note that I restarted my computer and immediatly tried to delete as soon as I logged on. Now my first thought was that it's a virus, but I scanned it with the free version of Avast! and got nothing. I think it might have something to do with how I downloaded it.

I was using a download accelerator to download a patch for a video game. The first time it gave me an error and some options popped up (can't remember what they were) and I ended up with some small file. This happens when when the accelerator can't be used to download something. Well, I tried again and it said it needed to download 12 files; I clicked yes and got the app. that won't go away. After that I noticed a window had popped up saying I had to wait 26 minutes to download the file. So I downloaded something that I couldn't even download in the first place. Maybe that fudged it up, IDK.

Boot to safe mode (F8 when the computer starts, before the Windows logo) and try to delete it that way. If that doesn't work, have Killbox ready.

Same thing happened in safe mode. It just says another program is using it. Killbox couldn't delete it either.

Try the online virus scanner at trendmicro and report back.

I think you got more than a game patch. I can't imagine anything (good) running in safe mode as you describe.

You ran Killbox in Safe Mode?

I didn't run killbox in safe mode before, but I just tried and it worked.  :D
I didn't mess up when I deleted the back-up did I? Anyway, Thank you for all the help. Now I know what to do if something like this happens again.

I've not found anything yet that Killbox didn't get.

I don't think you could have been messed up more than you were. WHat site did you try this botched download from?

Just for common knowledge; I'm NOT attempting to hijack this thread:  I have two copies of a folder that even Killbox can't touch.  Not even in safe mode.  They're named "AntiPhishing", and I THINK they originally came from the MSN toolbar, which I tried, didn't care for, and uninstalled.  Interesting thing, though; I was able to delete the contents of the folders, so now they remain on my system, empty.  I even renamed the parent folders "Won't Delete" and "Won't Delete 2"!!

Not sure about the exact site as I was looking all over for the right file. I pretty sure its 3dgamers though.

    just for information sharing,
i have used this http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/unlocker1.8.3.exe on my windows. Everytime i encountered access denied when deleting files, it will launch and show me what's holding that file.

Boot with a Linux Live CD and delete them that way.  ;)

No, didn't work.  Still there.  I don't mind; they're not hurting anything.

I dug up this old thread because I thought that maybe some of you would be interested.  I found a way to delete the 2 folders that I mentioned in this thread.  It wasn't even my objective at the time, I just came across it...  http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=308421.  I'm only posting this to share the info; this wasn't even my thread in the first place.
