Yes I did that and then rebooted again and it went straight to loading XP

If you can boot from floppy, use Smart Boot Manager.  There's a link in the software FAQ (see my signature).

I will try using that but how exactly does it work once i have it downloaded?  And does it really matter, considering the error message saying the version of XP i have is newer than then one on the disc?

If you run the program you download, from the command prompt, it will display brief help.  You'll need a blank floppy.

Don't worry about that.  XP is XP.  Your installed version may just have a service pack that the CD version doesn't have.  You can install it afterwards.  Good luck.
