256 Colours not avaible?
« on: September 11, 2004, 07:26:10 AM »
I am trying to install a game from 1996, called Bad Mojo, however, it tells me I have to set my monitor to 256 colours. However, it seems like there's no such option anymore. It is either 16Bit or 32Bit. Is my videocard ( ATI/Radeon 9800Pro) unable of just showing 256 Colours? I cannot seem to go below 800x600 either.

Using Windows XP Home and have an ATI/Radeon 9800Pro

Will it not allow you to play anyway?

When I run setup.exe it tells me the computer has to be set to 256 Colours, I press ok and it closes the window that had opened.

Thanks, Merlin. I hadn't thought of using compatability mode. Let alone the wizard. Learnt something today.

However, as usual, the compatability mode does not work. It generated a general protection error.

Any other suggestions?

Wait... Are you trying to say these Nvidia drivers weren't made for ATI cards? :-X

I have the latest ATI drivers. The problem is that I cannot go below 800x600x16. In VGA mode (F8 on bootup) I can go down to 800x600x8. however, I just want 256 colours so I can install Bad Mojo.

Is this not possible in Windows XP?

The videocard runs very good, it does exactly as it was meant to do.

However, I'll explain it again, when I attempt to install the Bad Mojo game it tells me I have to set the monitor to 256 Colours. However, all I can choose from are 16 and 32Bit colours.

Running it with compatability mode in 256 colours generates a general protection error.

Time to face the facts, Raptor. If you want to play the games, you will have to make your machine dual boot with Win98. A hard lesson learned by many Linux users too, if your a gamer you will have to have 98 lying around somewhere. 98 is the best OS for gaming.

I have another game from 1996 made by Sierra which runs perfect on Windows XP.

I used to have Windows 98 but I upgraded to Windows XP because Windows 98 would not accept my 9000Pro drivers. I have been using Windows XP ever since.

You did not quite answer my question, though, is Windows XP capable or not capable of displaying 256 colours? if yes, why can I not select 256 colours?

You will likely have to use a work around. Copy the installation files to the HD and set the compatability from there. When the files are on the HD you can run the compatabilty wizard or set the compatability mode manually.

The game came from a .Rar file so I have allready tried as you suggested.

Is Windows XP not capable of displaying 256 colours? Is there a file I can edit in order to force it to display 256 colours?

Did you expand the .Rar file before using compatability mode?
