I'll try that again.... ;)

I've gt a new laptop with no LPT ports only USB.

I've got two different HP printers a deskjet and a laser...

Bought a USB lead and plugged them in and installed the drivers bought neither is working or printing the test page.(used wizard)

When going through the Wizard to install I couldn't find the option for USB so I selected LPT1, I think this is whats causing my problems...

It's either that or that darned DEP program which will not allow me to open anything in control panel

You didn't mention what OS, but, being a new computer, I will assume XP. If this is the case, you DO NOT need the wizard. simply plug in your USB cable and windows will do the rest for you. If, upon starting the wizard, you read the first screen, it will mention this.
Also, are these USB capable printers, or did you buy one of the USB to Parellel converters?
Good Luck.

Uninstall in add and remove programs, then reboot and reinstall the software and THEN plug in the printer. THat is the customary HP way.

There's usb ports on the printers. I can only assume that this makes them usb compatible but I don't think they are plug and play as they're not recently purchased....

Tried just plugging them in and was waiting for the screen to say new hardware detected but it never came...

Thanks for the assistance will go and see what the craic is....

p.s. whats a usb/parallel converter....

just noticed that the usb lead is 1.1  does this make a difference??? :-?

You should be able to go into control panel/printers and select the printer. Right click and select properties. Under the details tab, select the port to print to.

I would go into control panel/add-remove programs and remove any and all printer programs. Then go to printers and remove all installed printers. Reboot the laptop, plug in the selected printer to the USB port, let windows find it and ask you for the drivers. Windows XP may even have the drivers for your printer already. If after trying this, the selected  printer still refuses to cooperate, go to its properties and make sure local port is selected.

    Good luck
