Win XP Desktop BAckground Missing

hi i  got hte problem of my Desktop background missing its just a blank screen with the icons showing so i restrated my computer and teh same thing happened i went to the desktop properties to change the background wen i clicked apply the slecetd background didnt show  i then tried it again and noticed it jumped from the selected bacground to teh None tab does any one know how i can stop this
