ZIP Stuff
« on: August 27, 2006, 11:26:10 PM »
I am having trouble opening the file located in the download area (at the top of the page on the link below). I cannot get it to open and extract. I am using Zip Genius, and its not opening.

Here's the link:
http://www.webmin.com/index.html

If someone can FTP or send it to me in an email in the  .ZIP for Windows XP format, it would be much appreciated.

No need to download Webmin!  It's included as a package in most full blown Linux distributions.  Just install it using the package manager.

My package manager doesn't work, besides, I want to load this onto my Windows PC, and I cant transfer one single file from my Linux to my PC. I ha vent built my server yet, Rob. (But as soon as I move, its going to be!)
Thanks for the suggestion  :)

What would you say about Webmin compared to cPanel?

Webmin is quite a different tool to cPanel.  It is rougher round the edges, but it is designed for more or less complete administration of a Linux server.

What do you mean, your package manager is broken?  Get that fixed first.  It is POINTLESS running a good distribution of Linux with a broken package manager.  You NEED it for your software and security updates.  Don't even think about trying to install something not designed for your particular distribution if that distribution is broken.  You'll end up installing the wrong C libraries or something and making your system completely unusable.

The package manager just doesnt work... you right click the desktop, and click System, and select the manager, and nothing happens. I don't know how to fix it.
I cannot just reinstall Linux (Vector Linux) since I have files on my Linux computer that I cannot get onto a floppy or USB Flash Disk. I don't have it on the Internet, so security updates don't seem to matter. I don't have any software  I  would like to load onto Linux right now, so it doesnt seem that I really want to do anything else to it right now.
I am currently using a Windows PC. The MBHOSTING service for my website is a Linux/Unix server (with great security) and that is why I want to get it onto my Windows PC.
I need someone to open that archive, and put all its contents in a Windows .ZIP format file.
Once I have that file in that format, I can upload it to my site, and then run it on the web.

(Deep breath)
I just woke up, and have a headache. (so I'm not intending this post to make myself sound moody today)

I think the package manager is called GSLAPT PACKAGE MANAGER or something package manager.

I'm doomed. Its an ongoing circle.

I am going to have to get a professional server soon for a family website, and there are changes because of pricing that I may have to rule out cPanel and get something else.

Aha.  I wonder if Vector Linux is Debian based?  (Can you confirm, Mark?)

If so, try the following, at a shell prompt: apt-cache search webmin - you'll get a list of all the available Webmin packages.  If the list whizzes by too fast, you can use Ctrl+PgUp/PgDn to see more.  Once you find packages you need, you install them with apt-get install package-name.

But I still have no way to get it onto the net at this time.
